Optiing Out of Ads does nothing/misleading

So, I followed the instructions to OPT-OUT, I still get annoying ads
to the right of my email when I open it up.
I went back to OPT-IN and then manually blocked the ads, I even
downloaded Google's plug-in to block the ads.
None of the options work at all. Google's description of how it all
works is a farce and untrue. I am going to write a complaint to my
state's Privacy Commissioner. This should not be allowed.
The only way to stop these annoying ads is to use Firefox with Script
Block. I guess this explains in part why there is no Google Toolbar
for Firefox any more.
