There's a lot of inforation about this error and how to investigate it
further. But the first thing I'd look at is whether you have SSL
keepalives configured, and if the problem correlates with particular
browsers or URLs
C.

 Hi,
We experience a lot of slowness on our HTTP server. When we are
requesting a certain page from a web browser, the browser keeps saying
"Connecting...", or sometimes "Waiting for...".
It's a HTTP server with mod_ssl, everything goes through SSL. When a
user tries to access without SSL, it's redirected to SSL.

What about using a separate apache instance for each vhost on
alternate ports?
Then using mod_proxy (proxy pass and reverse proxy pass) on another
instance can answer on port 80 for all the other instances and route
requests.
You end up with resource usage that can be directly tied to a specific
apache instance/vhost.

Exactly right, if I settle for writing realtime (%D) to the log as a
crude proxy for actual resource usage. I know how to relate the
virtual hostname to the realtime in the log. What's wrong is simply
that realtime is not what I want to collect.

If you've got a wp blog, you could also add a test like this to the
top of your index.php file:
if (stristr($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR '], 'yuppietel.net') !== FALSE){
#send matches to foo.com
header('Location: [link]
#end the script.
die();
or as a rewrite rule:
RewriteBase ./
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^http://(.+\.)?yuppietel.net/ .*$ [NC]

For this particular http server instance, the client has a dedicated
circuit they use to connect to the site on our server. Is it possible
that data along the circuit is being corrupted, and is bringing down
the web server instance? Is that something that is feasible? Thanks.

You could, of course, use a single RedirectMatch to re-route
requests. It would certainly be neater than 500 odd Aliases (I doubt
that handling 500 of them would "cripple" Apache, it's pretty good at
such things). I'm a bit confused, seems like the simplest approach is
just to give each of your users a directory in Apache's document root,

 Have a look at mod_status.
You'll also see what requests are taking a lot of time to process if
you setup mod_log_config to report %D - you might also want to have a
look at mod_log_firstbyte
HTH
C.
