SSLMutex and AcceptMutex choices?

Is there a layman's explanation similar to AcceptMutex [1] for SSLMutex as I'm
trying to understand what it does (sans looking at the code) in order to decide
whether 'sem' or 'pthread' is better suited for a Solaris 10 environment.
