I'm not sure but you may not have properly shut down Apache earlier
and still have the pid file in the log directory.

Shut down Apache if running, go to the logs directory and delete the
httpd.pid file if it exists.

What does your listen directive say? If you chose current user then it
may be set to port 8080, in which case you would need
http://localhost:8080

The installation wizard chooses port 8080 for current user only.

Which was what the OP said he chose.

Apache quit working for me when I installed Norton AV. Had to uninstall AV
to fix. Uninstalling just Norton firewall did not help. The error log would
just go on forever.

I had similar problems with Norton, and not just with Apache but other
programs, as well. McAfee (usually v.7) is another culprit that seems
to cause problems. Even the built-in XP firewall has been an issue for
some. Now using Zone Alarm Pro which works well most of the time with
Apache (yet that 1% is just enough to drive you crazy, though). It
sure is getting more difficult to get everything compatible, stable,
and secure.

I'm running also Apache 2.0.44 (Windows Installer Version) with
Mod_ssl/2.0.44 and OpenSSL 0.9.7a with Activestate Perl 5.8.XXX on
Windows XP Pro w/ Service Pack 1.

http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi

Downlaod the Installer version and try again.

It should work fine.

Good luck,

OK, I have just about pulled all my hair out. No matter what i try I
still get this same problem whether it be via "localhost" "127.0.0.1"
or the IP of the server from another machine on the network or from an
outside connection. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling apache
to no avail. I even tried the "IndigoPerl" version and still the same
thing. When I try to connect through a browser it just sits there. It
obviously "sees" the server but just won't process the page. I have
tried directing to different directories. I have tried several
different ServerName directives including localhost, 127.0.0.1, and my
actual domain name. I know it is not a corrupt version of apache
because I have used 2 different downloads both MD5 checked.

System Specs:
WinXP Pro SP1
Linksys 4 port router with port 80 properly directed

I have combed through the http.conf so much that I could probably
rewrite it from memory. The Error log is showing NO errors and a
proper start up. The only thing that seems unusual is the access log
remains blank even after numerous connection attempts. I know the
system is running properly as I have Apache 1.37 installed and it runs
just fine. (and yes, I do turn it off before I install Apache 2 and do
not let it start on boot) I have messed around with this thing for 2
days now and quite frankly am tired of it. If it weren't for some
major security issues I would just say screw it and move on. But I
can't. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. If someone
who has it working might post their http.conf file that might be
helpful. The only other thing I can think of is maybe there is some
obscure permissions that need to be changed in XP.

Negative, no firewall issues. I even placed the server in the DMZ of
the router and same thing. I can tell the browser sees the server
because when I try to connect and it shows the status bar at the
bottom, the very second I shut the server off the page completes with
the "Page could not be found" error. Right now I am running the 1.37
server on port 80 and the 2.0 server on port 8080. The old one is
working perfectly. The new onw...same thing as before. I have tried
eliminating modules on the load as well as loading all that could
possibly be loaded. I am about to bust out the razorblades for my
wrists here. Anybody?

I have the same problem with Apache 2.0.44 on Windows 2000
Professional. Here is what I noticed: I have McCafee VirusScan 7.0 Pro
running the system. When I stop the virus scanner, then Apache works
fine. So far, I am not successful in getting both the tools work at
the same time. You may want to check for any anti-virus tool on your
system. Good luck!

Tried that, I use Trend Micro virus scanner. Turned it off and still
nothing. Here's a bit of a wrench in the works; I used the same
installation file and installed it on my main box just to see. IT
WORKED! no problems. Showed the Apache default page just fine. So this
narrows it down to something on the machine. (BTW: the main box runs
the same virus scanner and it was turned on when it worked) Both
machines have the exact same copy of XP installed and the running
services are exactly the same. I did have the print spooler turned off
and noticed in the event viewer something had tried to access it. Does
Apache require the print spooler for something? I turned it back on
but this made no difference.

Other things I have checked:
netstat - when server is on it shows port 8080 listening. When I try
to access the page it shows port 8080 ESTABLISHED.
Access Log - Stays blank
Error log in Debug mode - shows all is normal
Router log - This is kind of wierd. On first connect the log shows the
incoming to port 8080 then shows and outgoing from port 8080. If I
disconnect and reconnect it does not show it again. (KeepAlive?)

I am looking for my baseball bat right now, something is going to get
damaged if I don't figure this out. :)

I just have to check and confirm this. You accessing your pages by
http://localhost:8080 or http://127.0.0.1:8080, correct?

Maybe look at the host file to see if there is the entry 127.0.0.1
localhost in there (usually is by default).

Yes, it is there. I still have the older version of Apache running on
the same server at port 80 and localhost and 127.0.0.1 work fine. I
know I will figure this out eventually and it is going to be something
so minute (like the hosts thing) that i will kicking myself in the
head for it. ;). I will leave it running if you want to see what I am
talking about. The address is:
http://airtampa.net:8080
The old server has a public site on it at http://kwi.airtampa.net
Both servers are on same box.

Still have not gotten it to work. :( But....
Here's the only thing I see that is different between the two machines
I have installed it on; the one that won't work had IIS installed on
it and running at one time. It is and has been turned off this whole
time but the fact that it had been installed leads me to believe the
problem lies somewhere within. I did completely uninstall IIS but did
not go through and clean out registry entries. It still did not work.
Same thing as before. I did go through and remove all the users
related to IIS as well but to no avail.

Has anybody figured this out yet. I am getting desperate and am seeing
a format and re-install in my future.
