Domain Name server question

I am setting up a web server using MacHTTP. The mac it is runing on is
currently identified by an IP adress, but not a domain name. I understand
that to be named it has to be listed on a name server, but to be honest I
am fairly hazy on the specifics. It would be most helpfull if someone
could tell me how to either set up a name server, or at least clue me in
on how the domain name system works.
