Is Netscape a meaningful alternative to those I listed above?
Netscape is an old project, it was ended in 2008 so do not even consider it.
Now... IE 8 is still Internet Explorer: Windows Only, Not safe and Won’t
implement many web technologies that others do.
Firefox is pretty good, available in many operating systems and fairly
fast. Very good security and very good adherence to standards.
Chrome is really fast in rendering sites... but I have had some issues
with bad javascript scripts in pages where Chrome seems to not be very
permissive to coding errors.
I currently use Firefox to develop but I always recommend people to use
Chrome or Chromium.

Sorry, forgot to add.- Chrome seems to consume less memories than
Firefox and IE8. in my experience of course.
Some say that IE8 is faster and consumes less memory than Firefox, but
considering all the cons of using IE8, I would not care if that was real.

I have to say that Chrome is really fast too... But I trust more in the
rendering of Firefox.
