phew, that's a relief.
It was an encoding issue, not sure if it was a container issue(Tomcat)
or a Java thing, I haven't tracked it down yet but I'm trying to be
UTF-8 system wide.
In my custom tag
pageContext.getResponse().setContentType("text/html; charset=UTF-8");
fixes things for the time being.
Good to know I can come back here in future.
