Can anybody give me a clue as to why the icon on this site
http://www.rmhh.org.uk/
displays only intermittently in IE5?

The code in <head> </head> is:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.ico">

and favicon.ico is in the site root directory.

The favicon needs to be in the same directory as the page it will be
associated with, if not use the full URL of the file in the shortcut icon
tag. If you are finding difficulties yourself on your own machine, you have
perhaps bookmarked the page before adding the favicon, all traces of this
need to be removed before it will appear again. I have noticed that they
sometimes disappear if you clear out your cache.

Thanks for the input. The favicon.ico is in the same directory as the
referenced (index) page, as in the markup.
I have deleted all Temp Internet Files and the bookmark. The Icon now shows
up in the bookmark (Favourite) list, but still not in the IE address bar. It
used to do so.

Any other ideas, please?

Yes, Favicons are stored in the C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
folder. As a result they expire like all temp files if they are not
accessed reguarly. As Gwyneth pointed out if you clear your cache all
your favicons are lost unless they are also in the Shell Icon Cache
which is a hidden file in the windows directory. This cache can cause
problems if you are trying to update a Favicon that you have recently
changed. Even clearing your Windows Temp cache and removing all
previous bookmarks to it will not help sometimes.

I find it best to install a favicon in every directory on the site
whether using the link reference or not. This can tell you a lot about
your pages popularity. Anyway I've taken up enough space. If you want
anymore info I have a tutorial with problems section at;

Thanks, Steve,

I'll take your tip on installing favicon.ico in all sub-directories.

The icon is now showing up OK after I deleted all and added it to Shell Icon
Cache.
