At the moment, there are four newsgroups concerning authoring for
the WWW. Each deals with one specific sub-topic: HTML, images, CGI
and miscellaneous topics. As Web sites get more and more complex,
the boundaries between these four issues gradually disappear.
For this reason, a new newsgroup is proposed. This .site-design newsgroup
offers Web authors a forum to discuss the integration of various
techniques, and the principles of designing a functional and attractive
Web site.
RATIONALE: comp.infosystems.www.authoring.stylesheets
Web style sheets have been around for a number of years, but their
power and importance went largely unnoticed since few implementations
existed. Web authors, anxious to add creativity to their pages by
influencing the presentation, began to use Netscape's proprietary
extensions rather than the more powerful style sheets. This was quite
natural, since Netscape's proprietary extensions could be seen by a
significant portion of Web users, while few would see style sheet
enhancements.
Today, more and more browsers are implementing style sheets, opening
authors' eyes to unique features that allow influence over
presentation while preserving platform independence. The advantages of
style sheets became apparent, as did the disadvantages of continually
creating more HTML tags for presentation effects.
Currently, discussion concerning the use of style sheets takes
place mostly in comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html. As style sheets
are not actually a part of HTML, both topics would be better served
with a separate newsgroup. At this time, the most popular stylesheet
language is CSS1 (Cascading Style Sheets, level 1), but it is expected
that other languages will also be supported in the future.

As Web sites start to get more and more complex, the task of managing
an entire site "by hand" is getting increasingly difficult. Many
programs and scripts exist to make managing a large set of documents
easier. This ranges from scripts to search and replace amongst multiple
documents to programs that allow site management in a graphical
environment, to preprocessors that build documents using macros.
Since such programs often integrate the use of graphics, scripts
and HTML text, none of the existing WWW authoring groups are really
appropriate for discussion of these tools.

This newsgroup is intended for discussion of all issues regarding
the 'design' of Web sites. This includes, but is not limited to
the use of images on Web sites, and incorporating Java applets,
scripts or movies, and generating dynamic content.
Specific questions on creating images, HTML specifications, CGI or
Java issues should be posted to the appropriate newsgroup.
Cross-posting with any other WWW authoring newsgroup is strongly
discouraged.

This unmoderated newsgroup is intended for the discussion of Web
stylesheets. Style sheets can make an author's life much easier. With
style sheets, one only needs to specify presentational preferences
once, and the style can be applied to an entire site. Not only that,
but style sheets also reduce download time when one file contains all
the style information.
Topics for this newsgroup include:
* How to achieve a particular effect with style sheets,
* The relative advantages of different stylesheet languages,
* Specifications versus implementations, and
* Bugs and limitations in implementations.

This newsgroup is intended for discussion of tools (programs, scripts,
macros, etc.) that can be used for the creation, validation and
maintenance of Web sites. Tools like this can be as simple as a macro to
add WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes to all images included in a Web document,
or as complex as a complete site management tool.
Topics appropriate for this newsgroup include:
* How to install, set up and use a particular authoring tool,
* The relative qualities of authoring tools,
* Bugs, hidden features and workarounds,
* Macros and scripts to automate HTML authoring, and
* Announcements of new versions of authoring tools.
Software authors are encouraged to post announcements of
the availability of new versions, new products etc. to this group,
but repetitive postings concerning their software is not permitted.
