If you follow Firefox/Mozilla development, gopher support will not be a
built-in part of Firefox 4.0 when it emerges, probably sometime in Q4 2010
(see bug 388195 for the gory details). Mozilla had intended to remove it
years ago but community response kept support there until the new network
architecture arrived and Mozilla's administration stated they did not want
gopher to remain in core, even if it were ported (I did some initial work
on this in bug 562320). So gopher will no longer be part of Firefox 4 as a
built-in networking component.

That's the bad news. The good news is that Firefox 3.6 will have Gopher
support for the remainder of its supported life, which will probably be
close to a year (up to Fx 4, and then six months after that). The better
news is that we have permission to transition to a supported add-on (see
bug 572000). When you get Fx 4, you just go download the add-on, and
continue just as you did before.

The OverbiteFF add-on is already available for Fx 3.0-3.6 and the code for
Fx 4, while significantly different internally, will work almost the same.
You can download it now from the regular Firefox Add-ons site or from the
Add-ons window in your Firefox browser. It works with any Firefox,
including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. When Fx 4 is released, you just go
get the new version automatically. OverbiteFF also adds additional support
to Firefox, including hURL links, skinning, additional ports and CSO/ph/qi
support, and I plan to add more features to it after the Fx 4 transition.
Find out more about it from

gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/1/overbite/
http://gopher.floodgap.com/overbite/

If people sign up to the CC list for bug 572000, I think we can demonstrate
to Mozilla sufficient interest to expedite the review. At least that will
help direct new and curious users to the add-on, instead of getting outright
#fail. That will be removed in the future, I'm sure, but it's something.
Just add your E-mail address to it, and you will get updates mailed to you.

Send me your questions and comments. The sky isn't falling. Gopherspace
soldiers on :)

Thank you very much for your work on that. I think we can add the URL
here for this bug for new users/users not aware of this ?

It is disappointing that gopher is being divorced from Firefox in this
way.

Will people who attempt to visit gopher URLs in unsupported Fx 4.x be
prompted to download Overbite?
They really should..

I was quite surprised when I checked up on all things Gopher to find
this great new plugin. It actually makes Gopher something you can show
off!
Great for feeds and images, especially with respect to the "+"
functionality :) Wouldn't it be nice if you could zoom in on oversized
images, by the way?
That, and I'm also shocked the source code for gophervr motif has
turned up.. couldn't make it compile under Ubuntu 10.04 though :(

That's the idea with 572000. The SeaMonkey folks are also interested, so
I will be working up a new patch with a better interface at their request.

You can, if you click on them (it then takes over the entire browser
window).

I'm pretty sure Jeroen's patches fixed that. Are you working from the
6/22 sources?

Anyway, also see my other post today about Overbite Chrome and SeaMonkey
support. More clients in more places means continued survival.

I seen that, I was hoping for inline zooming.

I downloaded latest gophervr sources only a day or two ago. - Compile
failed. I'm compiling on a AMD64 system.

Now all we need is a little more recognition for gopher and we're all
set :) It'll be great for mobile phones!
Could the "+" functionality be put into Android Overbite? Could
Overbite make for a iPhone/iPad app?

Can you post the transcript of your build session?

Inline view is only possible with the Mozilla approach because gopher://
is a first-class channel with Overbite (and Mozilla 1.8-1.9). It essentially
dynamically opens up an iframe or img to itself.

Android Overbite is just a translator -- it downloads the gopher menu and
converts it for an internal WebView to display. It works inside some rather
important constraints, not least of which that gopher:// to Android is an
app URL scheme, not a transport mechanism. Changing that would probably
require changing Android.

I would love to do an iOS app. When Apple stops charging me $99/yr and
requiring me to have my app reviewed, we'll consider it :) Yes, I could do
it for a jailbroken device, but I think it's better to support a better
ecosystem.

I'm thinking about webOS support, however, and Felix Plesoianu has
PocketGopher which any mobile phone with MIDlet support can run, even
Crackberries.

No problem, see end.

How many do you need to sell to break even? :)

Keeping things pure for Apple should make them happy. :)

That sounds like a plan :) Now all we need is cracking good content
for gopherspace! I wonder: could one easily distribute EPUB files via
gopher?..
