SAGA - System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses - is a Free Open
Source
Geographical Information System (GIS) software licensed under the GNU
General
Public License (GPL). The SAGA GIS developer team now released a first
update
to SAGA GIS version 2.0b.

With version 2.0b SAGA's easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI)
became
based upon the open source, cross-platform, GUI framework 'wxWidgets'
(http://www.wxwidgets.org), which makes SAGA instantly available for a
wide
range of operating systems. Currently there are supported ports for
MS-Windows
and Linux.

Besides the data and analytical tools management the graphical user
interface
has numerous capabilities for the visualisation and manipulation of
data,
beginning with the creation of maps and 3d-views, the digitising and
editing of
data, up to the project management.

SAGA's true strength is its transparent object oriented Application
Programming
Interface (API) written in C++, what makes it to a first choice tool
for every
scientific developer, who has to deal with spatial data. The API's
class
hierarchy offers intuitive access to vector as well as raster data and
provides
a huge number of further helpful classes and functions including
numerical tools
and interaction with the GUI.

As result SAGA comes with a wide spectrum of geoscientific
applications.
Standard GIS functions like file access to many vector and raster
formats,
coordinate projections, intersections, raster/vector conversions and
various
interpolation options, are accomplished by state of the art methods in
geostatistics, terrain analysis, image processing, process simulation
and more.

With the SAGA command line interpreter it is now also possible to
execute SAGA
modules from a console. This is specially useful for automated
execution of complex
work flows using batch files/shell scripts or to execute a module from
another
program, e.g. a web application.

The SAGA User Group Association welcomes any support from the
community.
Organisations might do this by becoming a funding member. Developers
can now
contribute their source code through a CVS server.
