Send me an email with an initial estimate and some information about
relevent projects and we can get started.
Sincerely,

Hi Mike,
Im an electronics engineer, have worked on numerous commercial
instrumentations of measuremetn of process variable, some for chem
industry, process control, etc. (Id seen from your page you are
involved in chemicals, so I make some assumption this is for a process
analytical arrangement. Most of the shop grade transmitters are pretty
pricy and lean more to integration with the DCS system, but there are
some that make some nice reasonable cost inroads for limited Io
systems.
I dont know if this is within my scope of interest as taking on a
project, It would be expensive for me to get the build and lab
resources specd right now as Im working out of my little sisters doll
house which I retrofitted with a T1 but not much else, unless it is
for some high volume run rate and can justify the tooling and specific
design. (my home solder iron set I researve for brazing antique doll
tea sets, so cant really offer the hand resources in putting together
a hardware entity at this point. If paper design would fly if you have
proto and build resources, that would be ok, for me to as long as you
can manage the interface.
I can however, refer you to some interesting sites which offer
some extensive application and product support in thier web sites.
www.omega.com - > goto temperature.
www.digikey.com - > search for temperature, transducers, etc.
some simple digital modules that do the input conditioning pretty
well and allow some simple digital interface (pulse output) that can
interface to the PC a little easier is available at search of digikey,
find Grayhill 73G-ITxx series is pretty nicely featured for simple EOM
module block approach.
For the computer interface, the national instruments (www.ni.com)
has some extensive easy to setup products for computer interface, also
can try things like the USB instrumentation, several companies get
into the interface using this means. (web search can find some under
"USB analog input".).
Its largely trade off in how many you want to implement, the
intended application, if you want to fund specific development, coding
and hardware, or want to use a more COTs modular approach.
In lab settings for instance, (as pilot plant/ research work) Its
easier to do your interface via some lab grade instrumentations as
over the GPIB interfaced type of equipment, go OEM and do a little
visual basic to bring in your data set.
More specifics on the application helps too. What kind of response
time of the trandsducer-to-process can reflect to the design decisions
in how to implement or specify the required hardware interface.
Im making some assumptions as well in reading your home page that
you are involved with chemistries . .
... as far as initial spec, well, having worked in industrial, bus
device (HART and Bailey protocol transmitter bus) with Intrinsic safe
application, and interface to dozens of variations of process sensors
(process compatibility issues, mounting, process range, blah blah
blah) as those "expensive ones" do, this doing as an independant
design with no availability of design reference could go into several
years. But that is likely more than you are asking for, so in the
simplest case assumption in meeting only the 2 degree requirement, I
might ballpark an equipment and material cost of $600, with under a
couple weeks of engineering NRE, to somethign more manufacturable and
customized, given no other specs, of maybe somethign as little as $50/
unit, and two months of NRE, if to a specific singular case of
application requirement.
Yeah, you probably dont want to work with me, thats the best
nutshell I can give on this one, let me know if you differ.

Other considerations,
I am getting confused in what I am trying to infer from information
given.
I understand you are currently in collegiate program of chemical
engineering, hence, I make some assumptions of the research lab
setting, but am a little worried in reading of that you are or had
been working on commercial PVC work.
This I might be in some trouble with. I do not have an EE PE, nor
have access to that should there be cicuit design involved for
anything but the most casual application (I would need applciation
specifics and some use agreements). I could retain some PE for final
reviews, otherwise using the lab reviews for safety and agency and
product compliance signoffs, etc, thus dodging that little stickler
and be able to provide much of the design work, but the caveat would
be that I can only provide design services, and "services in the
nature and similitude and fallowing the guidliness of engineering",
but not advertised as engineering services per se. Ie: I can validate
the work and provide it to you to have some plant instrumentation PE
sign off if that gets you out of the legal loophole Id have to dodge
to responsibily do the work from the legal and liability standpoint.
This howver, could get into quite a bit of time.
Fluidized bed combustion looked like some tasty funky application,
bet you have to use some high speed analog input modules for that one,
but looks like you had moved on from that.
Im technically compelled and interested, maybe if its just some
casual work in specifying off the shelf components I could have some
interest in gaining applications knowledge as a pro bono, but would
have to cap my time pretty short.
I d be interested in what way you have intents on heading for this
if you would like to discuss it. Jeff = G3E9C1K2O Electronic Design

Some additional feedback are required in my intial design
assumptions.
Simple things I need to know. For instance, you work for oxy plastics
I assume.
So, is this going to be outfitted to industrial equipment ? for
monitoring purpose, and data acquisition, not for control ? Will it
only be outfitted to a specific equipment, or potentially, some array
of different equipment. I would need a full list, with thier
replacement and in service values.
My insurance carrier needs this specified in my contract agreements,
and It helps him know if he is going to underright the work.
Currently, my cap is set at $250,000 capitol in related equipment
that is affiliated with any design work that I do and above a certain
majic number I am not at liberty to discuss, I have to push it up to
my own PE review.
One of the simple complications of doing commercial outsource
design, Im sure you can understand the position. (dont want to
jeopardize that doll house now would we, Its my little sisters for god
sakes and All I have left).
