To understand the Notes 8 programmability story, you must first
understand the
new technology that has been introduced with Lotus Notes 8. The Lotus
Notes 8
client takes all the code that is the existing Lotus Notes and puts it
in the
Eclipse environment. This puts Lotus Notes on an open-source, Java-based
platform. Eclipse was originally created as an integrated application
development environment. Its open, plug-in-based architecture has helped to
make Eclipse a smart choice as the foundation for rich client platform
development. Lotus Notes 8 is built on IBM Lotus Expeditor, IBM's universal
managed-client software. Lotus Expeditor is built on Eclipse and has a place
in the IBM family of rich clients as a managed client for Service-Oriented
Architecture (SOA) and composite applications. As the successor to IBM
WebSphere Everyplace Deployment, Lotus Expeditor is used to extend Lotus
Notes,
WebSphere, and Eclipse infrastructures to a managed-client environment on a

Apple's new iMacs, Apple's is not the first all-in-one desktop with a glossy
screen, an ultrathin keyboard, and a trim profile. But unlike Sony's, HP's,
and others' all-in-one efforts, no other vendor comes close to Apple's near-
seamless aesthetic. And as the new iMac design impresses visually, so do its

Can small business count on VoIP? | CNET
Shawna Hampton, a small business owner from Kansas, knows she always
needs to
have a backup for her Skype Internet telephone service. Hampton, who
runs what
is essentially a one-woman Web development company in Kansas City, said she
was glad she had her cell phone handy when she was unable to make or receive
calls from clients for 48 hours during last week's Skype outage. She had
decided to make Skype's $40-a-year unlimited domestic calling her primary
phone system to save money when she started her company.

Review: Solid construction, biz-friendly features from HP laptop | CNN Tech
Fans of ultraportable laptops have had a lot of products to be excited about
in recent months, with two excellent models in particular standing out -
-the
Toshiba Portege R500 and the Sony VAIO TZ150. Those are flashy consumer
systems, designed to be thin, light, and eye-catching, but with high-end
prices to match ($2,000 and up). HP offers a more business-oriented
answer to
these systems in the HP Compaq 2510p, which boasts similar stats but a more
button-down design along with some corporate extras.

The iPhone has launched, and the iMac has been redesigned, which means it's
probably time for new iPods. Several different reports have surfaced
over the
past couple of days regarding revamped iPods that Apple may or may not
have in
the works. Other than adding color to the iPod Shuffle line, Apple
hasn't done
anything with the traditional iPods this year, and it looks like that's
about
to change.

Sun to change stock ticker to JAVA | CNET
In an effort to capitalize on the Java brand, server and software
company Sun
Microsystems will change its stock ticker from SUNW to JAVA next week.
Sun is
making the shift because Java has far greater brand awareness than the
company's name, said CEO Jonathan Schwartz in his blog on Thursday. The
current
symbol, which stands for Stanford University Network Workstation,
reflects the
company's origins but not its present, he said.

Spam Spreads Storm Trojan Across Internet | eWeek
The Storm worm continues to sweep through the Internet, this time via a new
series of spam e-mails that use login account confirmation details as
bait to
get recipients to visit malicious Web sites. The TRACE (Marshal Threat
Research and Content Engineering) team reported the spam e-mails appear to
come from a legitimate organization and offer recipients temporary login
confirmation details for a Web site. The spam uses text such as "for
security
purposes, please login and change the temporary Login ID and Password" and
includes a link to an IP address that is actually a Web site infected
with the
Storm Trojan.

Call centers put accent on speech recognition | CNET
Australians would rather deal with a decent speech recognition system
than an
offshore call center agent, typically based in India or another part of
Asia.
Speech recognition technology has matured to a stage where it can be used to
increase the efficiency of a call center and provide a better customer

Once upon a time, people went to libraries to find books instead of surfing
the Internet. IBM now wants you to walk into 3D Web worlds to browse virtual
libraries. Starting Thursday, IBM sales representatives in Singapore,

Life,
an online world where millions of participants create alter egos called

Technology to keep electronic eye on Hudson River | IBM
The Beacon Institute and IBM are teaming up to build the River and Estuary
Observatory Network, the first technology-based monitoring and forecasting
network for a major American river and estuary. The network will allow for
minute-to-minute monitoring of the Hudson River via a network of sensors,
robotics and computational technology distributed throughout the
315-mile waterway.
