Hello helpful netlanders!

I drew a black and white pencil drawing, which I then scanned and turned
into a GIF picture. Now I want to add various shades of pastels to make it
more interesting - it will be used as an imagemap in WWW. The sketch has
about 6 main objects, each of which I would like to surround by varying
shades of a different pastel color - sort of like a watercolor idea.

Obviously many picture producing, modification programs, particularly ones
that are single layered, object-based programs would not be suitable to add
color to the drawing without simply painting over the lines themselves -
the lines of the drawing must remain black and only the now white
background regions are to change to VARIOUS and DIFFERENT pastel shades.

Question: does anyone know of a program or hints/suggestions on how I might
colorize my sketch in varying colors and shades but not affect the black
lines of the drawing itself (except perhaps to adjust their sharpness)?
The gif is in 8 bit color (but a scanned image of a black and white pencil
drawing!).

Mondo thanks for any suggestions!!

P.S. I'll post the url when I'm done if it turns out well in case anyone
wants to see what it is...
