Has the 3d object archive at avalon.viewpoint.com been shut down?
I've tried FTPing there and get a "Connection timed out" error; ditto
using HTTP. Using 'nslookup' still resolves to an IP address, but
Google's cache of the site is dated Jul 15, 2006 (and seems to be
blank). If avalon is gone, is there a mirror site or a site that will
pick up where avalon left off?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Ad[Thanks]vance.

I guess it moved to http://www.zgdv.de/avalon/ . This site looks very
much 3D, Object, OpenGL, OpenSG.
I am an interested layman in advanced computer graphics, but I bet that
this is what you are looking for.

I found http://www.zgdv.de/avalon/pages/nodeType/Viewpoint.html by
Google >'avalon viewpoint' and peeled down this URL until I got
something looking like a home page.

You had me excited for a few moments, but unfortunately that's not the
Avalon that I'm looking for. ZGDV is selling a VRML add-on called by
that name, just as Microsoft decided to use it as a code-name for its
new user interface API, which can produce a lot of false hits. For
several years, the US Navy hosted an archive of 3D models on a server
called avalon. In the last 1990s, a company called Viewport adopted
the archive when the Navy decided to stop hosting it. Last week, I
went looking for it.

>From poking around www.archive.org, it looks like it may have started
getting neglected back in the 2002-2004 timeframe. Unfortunately, the
keepers of the site apparently did everything via a single CGI script
and a backend database; the Internet Archive has particular trouble
backing up things like that. The repository used to be mirrored at a
few FTP sites, but they all seem to have discontinued that.

At this point I'm hoping that someone has burned some CDs or otherwise
kept a personal copy.

Hate to resurrect this old thread, but unfortunately it seems that there are no online archives of the Avalon server. I seems it was mirrored on the povray ftp server but that also is gone. Also the avalon CD cannot be found anywhere. Archive.org contains a lot of walnut creek CD-roms but not the Avalon 3D.
Has anyone ever backed up this stuff?

Mark.
