I need to perform some motion capture simulation where I take motion
capture data (mainly in bvh format) and render an animation of a human
model performing the moves. I will then later try to recreate the
skeletal motion based on the previous rendering. Sounds bacwards,
which it is, but it is for simulation and comparison of algorithms.

My problem is that I am unfamiliar with the various rendering packages
so a simple task becomes complicated.
I would therefore like to ask if someone could suggest an _easy_ tool
which lets me load a human model, bind it to mocap data and render the
model performing the mocapped moves. If the tool alows for cloth
simulation so the model can be clothed, then that would be a big plus.

I do not need any fancy graphics effects.. just the model moving and
an option to export this as a video. Not even textures are a
requirement. Just a skinned model moving. I do need to be able to
reposition the camera myself though.

You could take advantage of the free trueSpace 7.6 download from
Caligari, and use one of the included objects like TankGirl.

I did try that actually. I had little luck finding info on exactly how
to bind my importedbvh-data to the tank girl. The best I could get was
to import the skeleton and make it move. Perhaps I was just unlucky
but nowhere was there info on how to go from there to using it on the
standard model.

If you look into it, you will see that the "standard" Tank Girl
is rigged with additional features and you need to load or
adapt the skeleton to match the standard .bvh files that you
can download. Some of the links I posted should have shown
that and led you to where that is explained. Follow the links
and continue on.

How is: "The best I could get was to import the skeleton
and make it move." not what you are asking for? In detail,
so that what you really want, can be found.

Thanks for the links. I will look into it.
It does however seem that the easiest solution will be using Poser
which has rigging that matches my mocap data.

Well, DUH!!

So there was no real point to your post?

You already had a working setup?

This is a good example why it is pointless to try and help
Googlegroups posters.

Yo are jumping to conclusions ;-)

I had been looking into the problem for a while with no luck. I posed
a question... and you know what? I did not just stop looking for a
solution and sit on my hands while someone else were expected to solve
my problem. I assume that is how you do things yourself?
I received an answer, replied and then discovered the solution. Then I
received another answer and explained that I had aparently found a
"better" solution than what I was being recomended.

What is the problem in that?

When it comes to google groups... I used it because my isp's
newsserver was dead and has been for a few weeks not. Does that make
me part of some larger group of stupid people?

OK, so you found out, after you started this thread, that Poser
would work with the particular mocap files that you already
had on hand? If you had posted the name of the program that
you used to make these mocap/BVH files or their source, I
wouldn't feel so sandbagged. I had the impression you had no
particular mocap file format in mind and were looking for a more
general approach.

While there are plenty of honest, innocent posters using
Googlegroups; it has earned a reputation as a source of the most
annoying con artists ever inflicted on the usenet.

Ken

P.S. This appears to be a mostly dead Newsgroup, and if
you have found the right programs to support your workflow;
you should find the web forums supporting that software.
There should be a number of forum sites supporting Poser,
for instance.

Actually I had several formats, none of which I could "plug and
render" with trueimage. I later found out that using poser it was just
a matter of starting the program and importing the bvh-files.

That was not to put you down. I did however have a concrete task to
solve, failed in doing so, asked for help (which you certainly DID
provide) while at the same time stumbling over an even easier solution
myself.

I am sorry that you feel sandbagged. I just cant really see how I
could act diferently. Well.. I could have pretended to not having
found poser and then just thanked you for your feedback and links
(which I did read anyway, since trueimage looks interesting for many
other uses). Then you would not have known to be insulted, but do you
really think that would be a "better" solution?

I did not know that. Wonder why. Do they need a nice browser interface
because they fail to comprehend how to set up a nntp-client? Hm.
Well... I am not a con artist though :-)

It seems that newsgroups are dying in general. Too many people leave
for the many web forums making it next to impossible to have a common
interface/standard. :-(
Anyway, my use of poser was just to render figures moving with my data
and then extract video streams of that. Nothing fancy, so I am done
and can return to more familiar grounds :-)

By the way. Glad we got the problem sorted out. No need to stay upset
over a misunderstanding.

It was "trueSpace 7.6" by Caligari, just recently bought by
Microsoft.
