Recently I saw some examples of photos that had been modified to look like
watercolors and were actually printed on watercolor paper using a big ink
jet printer. Amazing result.

Does anybody know how this is done or if there are any writeups on this
technique?

Thanks, DaveC

i'm guessing here, but it might be a good start to try
filters/artistic/watercolor and filters/sketch/waterpaper.

I don't know if this is the one you were referring to but take a look at
this site: http://www.ibelgique.com/digitalfriends/impressionism.htm . This
is about impressionism but could be used as a starting point.

Just remembered another site that you can check out.
http://www./reallyusefulpage.com/techniques/pen-ink.htm . I have used this
technique to create note cards and the effects are really nice.

There is a tutorial for exactly what you want at a site called "Really Useful

There is an excellent plug-in set called "Virtual Painter" which has a
watercolor filter which mimics very effectively the watercolor look.
Unfortunately up until now it has been available only in Japanese.

An English version is in the works and AFAIK will be available soon, subject
to negotiations with the distributor. It also contains filters which mimic
11 other fine and graphic art techniques.

Keep an eye out for it. I am in contact with the Japanese developers and
will post a message as soon as they let me know about the English release.

I think this particular tutorial was originally suggested by Janee:
