What's the difference between these 2 programs (in terms of
Photoshop)? Which is better? I have heard a lot about Painter 6 and am
about to buy it because it has the painting tools I'm dying for. But
I've never seen Deep Paint.

Would appreciate comments and evaluations. I'm always searching for
better painting and artistic finish tools.

Thanks,
Scarlett

I have both Painter 6 and Deep Paint. For an all around painting program
I'd go with Painter.

Deep Paint is the paint engine for 3D Deep Paint, so it is better at that
kind of texture painting with channels for the color, bimp and shine. 3D
Deep Paint contains one additional channel plus the tools to produce UV
texture maps.

Painter is more traditional in its approach and is like painting or drawing
by hand. Various paper textures, blending and paint brushes, knifes and the
such. You can "dry" a wet canvas so your watercolors will not run. It has
layers which are PhotoShop format but not as in-depth.

Both programs support the Wacom Airbrush features fully, where PhotoShop
treats the Airbrush as just another pen.

I've used both. I like Deep Paint's interface more.
But Painter is probably more powerful.
You can get Painter Classic free with a Wacom Intuos Tablet
You'll need one anyway with these sorts of progs.

Do you find that the fact that Deep Paint is a plug-in makes it a lot more
convenient? I have Painter, but find I don't use it that much, since I have
to close the file in Photoshop first and then work on it in Painter. I can
open files in both at once, but changes made in one aren't updated in the
other. With a plug-in, I might use it more.

Yes, Deep Paint can operate as a plug-in. The only problem is that a layer
is given a background by Deep Paint and any layer effects are not editable
after import. You have the same problem with some layer effects with
Painter also.

For anyone interested check ebay for Metacreations Painter 5. Someone is
selling a whole s**tload of bundeled CDs, registerable, for $25 each. If you
don't need the few extra features in ver. 6 (or you want to be able to buy
the upgrade for 1/2 the price of the full version) this might be something
worth checking out. I bought one and had no problems. The bundled version is
the same as the regular version except that the documentation is in .pdf
format on the disc.

$25 is too much for something that was given away *free* on the coverdisc of
PC Format issue 112 sometime last year.
