Remove white bckground from a jpeg - how?

Hi
I had a picture in a rectangular frame & I put it in an Elipse
This worked fine and the remaining background in the rectangle is
white & saved as a jpeg for inserting in a Publisher document
However, when I print this doc the white background around the elipse
is an off-white colour and spoils the appearance.
Anyone know if it is possible to remove this white background & if so
can u tell me how please?
