Can anybody please send me, or reply on the News Group, a list of good
tutorial techniques, on the subject of making paintings from photos?

It might involve the use of filters, either the ones supplied by
PhotoShop6,
or 3rd party ones. If you know of a software program for this, please
tell me.

Probably the best that I have found for this is a program/plugin called Deep
Paint. But, it is VERY expensive, and the painting is not automatic, you
have to do the work.

Here is the link: http://www.us.deeppaint.com/dpaint/deep_paint_home.htm

Here is a trial painting/photograph that I did:

There are also many tutorials that you can link from Janee's site that have
to do with "painterizing" photos. http://artlinks.home.att.net/

Harry!
I made one for you! and today i just posted another one. The first is for
a pen and inked watercolor. The one i did today is for more of a softer
looking watercolor. I'm interested in any feedback. Check out
http://graphicsgoddess.home.att.net to find both of them.

Harry, there are lots of ways of creating painting effects. One method
I've used that I've never seen elsewhere is simply taking advantage of the
anomalies created in jpeg compression, you know those colour blocks and
artifacts? I can't remember offhand how I emphasized these but probably by
running an emboss filter and fading it. Also select target spots and run
the PS underpainting filter... like so...

or like so...

or you can do something like this by selectively using PS filters and
rubbing with the smudge tool at, hmm, say 25%

If you simply want to run a filter without doing any actual work, there's
a free program called Paint Engine made by a guy in British Columbia. Not
sure about the URL but he also puts out FM (fantastic machine) tile tools
which I highly recommend.

Harry,

If what you want is the ability to render an existing image in a
"painterly" fashion, there is a plug-in base program, Deep Paint that is out.
It looks like it would do, but I do not have any first-hand experience with it.
I do, however, spend a good deal of time with a stand-alone program that offers
the universe, with regards to "painterly" technique - Painter (nee Fractal
Design, lately of Corel's stable). There is also another stand-alone, Studio
Artist, but I know absolutely nothing of it.

The old Aldus Gallery Effects (were brought in to Adobe's portfolio, but I
don't know if they are around anymore), also did some "texture" effects, that
approximated brush strokes, etc, but I found them to be lacking for what I
assume you are looking for.
