Basically CS and CS2 no longer include the DLL files that let Explorer
display thumbnails, and uninstalling v.7 etc deletes the file. If you are
installing on a fresh computer that's never had earlier versions of
Photoshop installed then you are missing various bits in the registry too.
This link fixes the lot (though the reason that Adobe removed the feature is
because it was unstable supposedly though I've never had any problems with
it - So caveat emptor.)
If you have had a previous version of Photoshop on your computer then all
that should be necessary is to place psicon.dll back into the shell folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\.
I did miss the thumbnails in CS1, but with the advent of CS2 and the bridge
I do not miss the thumbnails any more.

We stopped shipping that DLL due to intractable issues found with
Windows Explorer. This was the cause of issues such as files appearing
locked and not being able to be moved, renamed or deleted without a
reboot. So while thumbnails may now show up, this may also be the
cause of future problems as well.

Marc, do these problems ever surface in absence of PS? Are
they limited to XP or include Win2K also? What does Microsoft
have to say about them?
And the reason they don't is that the .dll was flaky and caused a lot
of problems to people's operating systems. It was so flaky that it
wasn't worth repairing so Adobe ditched it.

Fair enough - however it's caused no problems for me so I wanted it back!
Shame they didn't fix it rather than ditch it.

adobe said that the problem was in the operating system, not specifically
the dll.
On hubby's comp it used to do that in 7.0 then it somehow disappeared? patch
to 7.01, upgrade to CS, upgrade to WInXp? I'm not sure what fixed it. We
reformatted that comp and reinstalled everything
it works fine now, no saving errors and I have my Thumbs back in Explorer.
Will keep y'all posted if I see any issues.

Windows XP SP2:
It sometimes happens in Explorer with just regular files. For example,
if you have left an Explorer window open with a video selected, we've
found often we're not able to move that video from another Explorer
instance... it says "file in use". The file is being locked by the
orginal Explorer instance. It's a pain!!!! So tend to have preview
turned off and use ACDSee for previewing general multimedia files, and
Bridge for all artwork.

No, it was removed from CS onwards.
Well, they would say that wouldn't they. Given that no-one else's
software displays a similar problem...

So far, everyone attempting to use the explorer extension APIs has run
into the same problem (and most have removed their DLLs since). They
do let us talk to engineers from other companies once in a while, ya
know.
Chris
That's what I though - so the operating system explanation doesn't
completely wash...

Exactly ;-)

<g> and there I was thinking they looked you in a darkened room with a

These problems can happen with any DLL that examines files for Explorer
as did the DLL that creates thumbnails for PSD files. Explorer's
sequence of events when invoking such a DLL can leave the DLL in a
state with the examined file still open and then not able to be moved
or deleted or overridden.

Shhhh! Don't give them ideas!
