I've got PSP X1 and I'm trying to do a particular effect, but can't work
out how to do it. What I need is this:

Take a circle with gradient fill and then "pull it apart" down a
vertical diameter so I end up with a basically rectangular shape with
the ends being each side of the circle, and the bulk of the rectangle
filled with the gradient that was on the diameter line.

How do you create your circle? Try starting with a rectangular selection
the select the circle selection and change the mode to ADD now add a circle
at the left and then the right. then fill the selection with your gradient

Doesn't work for what I want to do.
I have created button icons using sunburst. I need to extend those into
rectangular(ish) buttons with the same lighting effect.

Are they in Vector format If so use the pick tool and drag the middle side
node outwards You can do the same with raster images but the results aren't
as good.
Might just be quicker to make a new button using the Pill preset shape

I then end up with an ellipse.

I need a rounded rectangular button with the same shading and lighting
as the round
