Also try Blend mode = Multiply with a brush of pure color, yellow
for example. It gives a somewhat brighter effect.

If you're using PSP8 or later, there's a preset for it in the Paintbrush
preset drop down.

Uh, what "marker tool"? There is no such thing in either 8, 9 or 10. The
preset I'm talking about is a paintbrush. It's in the preset drop down.
If you don't have the marker tool in your version(s), maybe there are
inconsistensies based on release dates? I did an update right after
my purchase to bring 9.0 up to 9.01.

Then you are missing a ton of stuff. If you bought an electronic version
none of the presets would have come with it. You can download all the
stuff that CD buyers get for free here:

You're right, they are Art Media Tools. To me, a tool is a tool. But
since one of them was labeled "marker" it seemed to me that would do
the job. Actually, it does work as a solid marker, but I just
couldn't get it to work as a highlighting marker. But as you say,
maybe it's useless since the brush does the same thing and more -
particularly the highlighting I needed.

I was wrong. My version has two presets for the brush - Large hard
edge and small blend. Not sure if that's what you were referring to
or if you think I should have more presets than that. But those
presets didn't do any more for me than just setting the paintbrush
blend to "multiply".
I purchased the program in a retail computer store. Aside from
upgrading, I also downloaded additional add-ons. I'll check out the
URL you gave above for additional features.

No. The highlighter preset that I created and that shipped with PSP8 & 9
is in the preset drop down, not the brush tip drop down. If he doesn't
have it (and a very large pile of other presets), he needs to download
both the 8 & 9 additional components.

Well I'll be darned! I knew I had installed the additional
components ages ago and never realized what I was missing! I
find that I don't have anything in my PSP9 presets folder but
have a gazillion of them in my PSP8 presets folder (including a
Highlighter preset, so I assume I have the additional
components), and I didn't have v.9 pointed to that v.8 folder. I
wonder what else I have in v.8 folders that are additional?
Guess I'll have to poke around!
I'm glad I stuck my nose in here or I'd not have found this.

Having posted my recent reply to you and then poked around my
PSP8 folders, I've discovered I have way more stuff in some 8
folders than the 9 folders, particularly things like gradients,
patterns and masks. The masks folder in 8, in fact, has a whole
bunch of jpgs with the scripts, while the few masks I have in the
9 folder don't have any jpgs in that folder. So now I'm in a
quandry.
Is the v.8 stuff going to work in v.9 if I add a folder path to
my ver. 8 folders in my v.9 program? Is it going to cause
problems? Which stuff is compatible and which isn't? If a file
in a v.8 folder has the same name as one in a v.9 folder can I
assume that I can just delete the file with the earliest modified
date and go with the later one?
Perhaps in my My Documents folder I should set up duplicate
folders for all this stuff (i.e., keep the My PSP Files/Presets,
for example, and set up a My PSP Files/Presets 2 folder and copy
everything from both the Jasc v.8 and v.9 presets folders into
the dup folder, overwrite previously dated ones when windows asks
if I want to overwrite a file, and see what sticks - or can you
see major issues with this approach?
i.e., is there some guidance somewhere on how to deal with these
issues??

8 to 9 should be okay, the problems start showing up going from 8 or 9 to X.

I think you might want to do that the other way 'round assuming you
still use both versions. If there are going to be problems it would be
with 8 being unable to read a preset created in 9. I simply copied
everything from 8's folders to 9's folders and told Windows to not
replace files with the same name. So any of 8's stuff that was not in 9
got copied and none of 9's stuff got overwritten.

Well, no, that would probably be fine too. I've not run across any 8
presets that won't work in 9 though.

I really doubt it, I don't know of anything anyway.

If you installed from CD, the stuff in your PSP8 folders came with the
product. All of the stuff that I (and several other people) created for
Jasc installs with the CD version. PSP9, I don't remember if the PSP8
stuff came on the CD or if you had to download. I do know that if you
bought the ESD of 9, you had to download the additional components
installer.

For the Paintbrush (not ArtMedia), there should be dozens, not two. The
ones that I alone contributed:
Charcoal
Tablet Noise
Colored Noise
Confetti
Crayon
Fade to Point
Floral
Hilighter
Instant City
Instant Crosshatch
Instant Pen & Ink
Lawn
Paint a Backdrop
Paint a Sky
Pastel
Pencil
Pile of Leaves
Polka Dots
PomPom
Scallops
Sheet Metal
Soft and Wet
Spikey
Squeaky Marker
Stamen
And there were a couple of other folks creating stuff too. I also did a
whole slew of presets for the Magnifying Lens filter, look in there I
guess and see if there are a pile of presets. If you don't have this
stuff, you've either not properly installed the extra components or
you've got your File Locations pointed to the wrong place.

I appreciate your response, and with the presets things seem to
be motoring along nicely. I actually use v.9 but keep 8 around.
If anything, I would be more concerned with things like Frames
and Tubes, given that one usually has to Export them when new
ones are created but I suspect between 8 and 9 there should be no
problem. Given how you handled it, I think I'll just take
everything from my v.8 folders and put them into my v.9 folders
and not let it overwrite stuff already there. Thanks again.

Yep, I had downloaded the additional components installer ages
ago, and I guess it installed stuff in the v.8 folders, but I'm
getting that moved.
Virtually all of my software, when available, is ESD (except the
OS). I usually trial stuff and - if I purchase - am too
impatient or find it less convenient to go to the store or wait
for it in the mail or UPS :-) Most decent software developers
also have online manuals, usually PDF, which I'd rather have on
my hard drive or burned to CD rather than hard copies of
multitudinous manuals taking up much physical space - and which I
only use for reference, never reading cover to cover.
Disadvantage, of course, is when "extras" don't come with the
ESD, but usually find and download them anyway. In this case,
they just didn't install where I expected - or I made the wrong
choice of install folders, which is likely :-)

I learned from your original exchange of posts with Angela, so it
just shows to go you what you can find from following posts and
gleaning info from others.
You'll find even more people involved in the Corel groups, which
you can find by going to the corel.com site, clicking on the
Support link, and then the Newsgroups link on that page and
scrolling down to the various Paint Shop Pro groups you can
subscribe to just by clicking their links.
Regards,
JoeB
I'll definitely check them out. I've always felt Paint Shop Pro can
do ANYTHING, and now I'm discovering I may have only scratched the
surface. I also dabble in programming and I've just now heard of
scripting which I discovered by doing just as you said - perusing the
exchanges in this group. That's something that I may have a use for,
also.
I'm a little confused, though. My PSP is made by JASC Software
according to the box. I didn't know there was a connection to Corel.
I used Corel Draw a decade ago and really got a lot of use out of it
back then.

Corel bought Jasc shortly after 9's release.
Well, NOW I've done it. I, too, found additional folders with items
that looked like additional presets I wasn't seeing. I used the
elipsis (if I recall correctly what I did) in the presets drop down to
locate other folders and selected one that appeared to contain more
presets. Whatever I did, I can no longer choose ANY presets. When I
do, I get an illegal function error and the program shuts down. I
tried a repair from the original CD but no effect. I guess I'll have
to uninstall and reinstall. I can't even go back to select the
original folder, but I'm not sure at this point which is the correct
folder to choose from.
HOWEVER, I think you're right that Angela and I were talking about two
different things. I may have had all the presets (2) that came with
the installation all along. I had a couple dozen shapes to choose
from. The presets box is identified as such, but just to the right of
that is an unidentified box which does not display a description when
the mouse is rolled over it which I assumed were just additional
shapes - not presets
Now I have nothing as far as shapes go, but I'll just reinstall and
stay away from folders I'm not absolutely certain contain the items
I'm interested in. I'm surprised, though, that PSP would attempt to
work with files that aren't intended for that specific purpose. But
it may be that there are other factors involved here so I'll just
reinstall.
Live and learn as they say.
Don
WHEW!!!!! I fixed it.
I found under FILES and PREFERENCES the spot where I could redefine
where to look for files and found the path I had last selected and
deleted it.
I'm back up and running.
Boy, I'm responding to more of my own postings than any other, but I
think I "misspoke" here. Angela indicated I should have more presets
and I would think she must be right. I'll check out the site she
listed for additional presets . . . or shapes . . . or whatever. I'm
thinking there are a lot more of all of these from JASC, Corel, 3rd
parties as well as those that Angela created herself.
Don
Don, you went about it the wrong way so likely loaded stuff that
weren't presets into your presets folder.
If you have versions of PSP prior to v.X, they will be Jasc
stuff, with v.X being Corel. Use Windows Explorer to go to
Program Files>Corel>Corel Paint Shop Pro X and click the plus
sign beside the last one. You'll see a whole bunch of folders
which contain various files used by PSP, like Picture Frames,
Preset Shapes, etc. One is called just Presets, and that is
where the presets are located.
Look and see if you also have a folder in Program Files>Jasc
Software Inc, which you will have if you have previous versions
or perhaps if you just installed the extras at one timd. If you
do, browse through there also looking for a Presets folders and,
if there is one you can see what presets are there. If you want
to move them to the PSPX presets folder, just highlight them all
and drag them to the PSPX presets folder or Cut, then Paste into
the PXP folder. You can do the same with Frames, etc.
You will have a similar list of folders in My Documents>My PSP
files. This is actually where you should be putting any presets,
frames, scripts, etc. that do not become installed when you
install the program. That way, if you have to uninstall, the new
stuff you've made or downloaded that is stored in the My PSP sub
folders won't be uninstalled so you don't have to go and find
them again.
Regards,
JoeB
I posted a reply to another post of yours telling you how to
search to see if you have other presets, etc., in a way that
won't cause problems like you encountered trying to do it with
the elipses. Some of that post assumed you had v.X but v.X is
Corel software because Corel bought Jasc after v.9. However,
read my post and it tells you where to find the folders in v.9
also.
Regards,
JoeB
Thanks for all info, Joe. I think this is where I screwed things up.
I did see those folders but I may have pointed the program in the
wrong direction, selecting files intended for one function and using
them for another.
Now that everything is up and running fine, I'll check out what you've
posted here and also grab some extra stuff online that Angela pointed
out.
I've been having too much fun with PSP. Now I'm late for work.

3rd party, what you'll mostly find are brush tips (nibs). I've got some

I've been using PSP for a number of years - now on v9.01 - and I've
downloaded all the goodies available on the site you suggested. But
my Presets for Paintbrushes is still listing on two - Large hard edge
and small blend. I've checked in the Presets subdirectory and those
are the only two listed in there. So where do I find all the Presets
that you say you contributed and that JASC is supposed to have
included? As I said, I downloaded and installed both the PSP8 and
PSP9 component updates on the site you listed and my File Location is
directed to the proper Preset directory so where are all these new
Presets and what am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

For both of you, when this thread started I was in the same boat
(even though I'd installed the extra resources) but at that time
was also organizing my different PSP resources. I happened upon
the folder Jasc Software Inc>Paint Shop Pro 9>Environment Maps
and found all of those brushes and brush tips in that folder.
Don't ask me how they got there. It might be worth a look.

JoeB:
Thanks for trying to help out. Unfortunately, having searched through
every subfolder under the main Jasc Software Inc directory and also
under the Corel directory - I have both PSP9.01 and PSP10.03 installed
on my 'puter, I was not able to find any additional Presets for
Paintbrush and believe me, I went through each and every subdirectory
with a 'fine toothed comb' looking for new Presets. Any further
suggestions as to where the newly installed 'extra resources' might be
found would be much appreciated.
OldTimer
You are aware hopefully that there are two separate directories to find
the various goodies?
Using PSP9 as an example,
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 9 has the factory
installed CD files in sub folders.
"Presets" would be the place to find the paint brush presets. You should
find the various tool presets alphabetically with tool names in part of
the file name.
The default save location should be something like
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_COMPUTER_NAME_HERE\My Documents\My PSP9
Files
or
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_COMPUTER_NAME_HERE\My Documents\My PSP Files
Both locations must be added in your file locations area under the
"presets" option. Sometimes, the installer doesn't do that properly for
all customers.
If you were adding the links under "Preset Shapes" that could be the
problem. ("Presets" are NOT the same as "Preset Shapes". The first are
tool settings and the latter are vector shapes. Also files ending
"PSPScript" can be nearly anything, go by the name before the period to
help you decide what folder it goes to.)
PXPX:
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro X
has factory CD installed presets in the Presets subfolder.
and the save location should be
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_COMPUTER_NAME_HERE\My Documents\My PSPX
Files
or
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_COMPUTER_NAME_HERE\My Documents\My PSP
Files
Both locations must be added in your file locations area under the
"presets" option. Sometimes, the installer doesn't do that.
The variation depends on if you separated the my PSP files newer
versions from the older versions at time of install.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You might try clearing the cache files so PSP will take longer on
startup next time as it rebuilds each cache file.
Exit PSP.
For 9 and X cache files are in your documents and settings
folder/yourcomputername/Application Data/either Jasc or Corelhere/and so
on.
Go ahead and delete the contents of the cache folder, leave that folder.
Empty trash. [This usually avoids a crash from desktop trash can being
full and PSP not liking it.]
Restart PSP.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
in PSP9.something,
Click on the Paint brush tool.
On the Tool Options Palette{F4 will make it appear if it isn't
already.. If it vanishes, just press F4 again to bring it back.}
Click on the far left icon "Presets".
You should see a drop down menu with "category" near the top.
Make it say "all".
Below, you should see every paintbrush preset listed from file locations
that are enabled.
Angela's contributions could be labeled "amc_name here".
Click on the "amc_Hilighter" name to select it.
begin drawing on your image.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Otherwise, do a search within MSWindows for "*.PSP_Script" without the
quotes.
Then note the file names beginning with "Preset_" and notice where those
appear.
Adjust file locations within the PSP preferences accordingly.

I don't have any brainstorm type of suggestion. As it was some
time ago that I downloaded and installed the resources (just
forgot I was supposed to have them) I don't remember if they come
in a self-installer form or what. You could always try re-
installing the resources from the downloaded files and pay
attention to all of the dialogue boxes that pop up during
installation (assuming some boxes do pop up) and that might give
you some clue.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Regards,
JoeB
MonicaW:
At Angela's suggestion, I did a full HD search for the word
'Highlighter', one of the Paintbrush Presets that she submitted to
JASC for inclusion in their Preset library. No luck. Not one single
file having the word 'Highlighter' in it. Then I did several more
searches using the names of several other of the Paintbrush Presets
that Angela had submitted but again, no such Preset files were to be
found. Angela has suggested that it's possible, even likely, that
Corel has decided to remove all Presets that were not developed
'in-house' and if this is true, that would explain why after what
appeared to be normal installation of the 'extra resource' files, no
additional Paintbrush Presets were to be found.
Being a long time user of PSP - I started with it back when it was in
its infancy as a freeware/shareware program - I was aware of the fact
that files get installed to many different locations and that one must
be sure to include those locations in the File Location section in
order for the main program to access them. But in this case it
appears that these extra Paintbrush Presets simply no longer exist in
the 'extra resource' files available for download from the Corel site.
Perhaps someone who has these Presets will be kind enough to post them
to either this or some other NG of their choice.
