Does anyone in here have Painter?? I'm learning some new stuff for 3D work
and folk are reffering to Painter's "With Water" and "gloss" effects...what
are these? Can they be re-created in PSP?? Is "With Water" just a sort of
"smudge"??
Can anyone help? :)

I don't know about Painter - however, Deep Paint 2D has some watercolor
brushes that paint in transparency levels and (I think) in degrees of water
saturation runs. This might can be done in PSP6.02 with smudge and a
semi-transparency level of the brush not sure how to get the water
saturation runs. Hope this helps some.

I just got Painter 5. You really have to play with everything to learn how
it works...there are people who have been using it for years and are still
discovering new things about it.

It's a great companion for PSP as it provides great textures, lighting, and
natural media brushes. I don't care for the way it handles layers, and
selections for everyday purposes, and you have to make sure you change the
settings for any brush you want to use on a transparent layer or it won't
work, plus it erases with what you originally set up as paper color when you
open a new image....no transparent erasing>_<.

It's definately not a replacement for PSP, it just does different things,
and what it does well, it does very well (painting).
Check out the impasto brushes...very cool<g>

Paint with water seems to have a diffusing effect when used with thier water
based media.

I have'nt seen the "gloss" effect...what version do you have?
I have also found it best to work in psd format. That way you can switch
between programs, and maintain all your layers.

Hi 'Blade. I have Painter Classic that came with my tablet. just checked it.
Water seems to be the smudge effects you mention, at least in Classic. What
version are you using? Corel has a $200 rebate on Painter 6!!

Ta mate :) I've been working with small brshes and smudge to get effect, a
pal suggests airbrush and smudge.
He said in painter making a custom brush was great for hair effects, which
are tricky!

Yes, I've got Painter 6. Painter concentrates on realistic
'Painterly' effects. A paintbrush in Painter, set to watercolor, may
be with color or with water, and it's effect on the image is much like
an actual watercolor effect. You even need to 'Dry' the image to go
to different paint effects, such as oils or charcoal. All of these
effects are far more than just a smudge or brush shape. Duplicating
the effects in PSP is very difficult, although there are plugins that
help. To an artist, Painter is the way tools should work, although
the program itself is far more difficult to master than PSP.

(there is also a difference in price between the two programs that
makes the home user flinch! Once you've kicked out the $500 or so
that the first costs, you can upgrade at about $100 per version.)

It used to be a MetaCreations product, but Corel has it now.
Here's the address to read the specs and see some examples.
(incidently, nozzles=tubes)

http://newgraphics.corel.com/products/painter6.html

Be sure to examine the screen capture in 'Club MetaCreations' to see a
typical tool layout, showing just a hint of the control you have over
the brush.

Ooooooh yes! I have discovered the perfect "hair" brush!
P5: Library=impasto, style= large round bristle,
method =plugin, sub category= transparent layer.

BTW: you can still DL the demo at Metacreations. You can't save, and it's
not the full version; but you can play with it and see most of the neat
stuff it does. You can get the full version on E Bay for about $30 (not bad
for a $500 program)

You're better off saving as a .psd so you don't lose any image quality.

Try E-Bay. They regularly have P5 for around $30...then you can upgrade to
your heatrs content <g>

Careful on E-Bay though.....you're likely to start bidding on everything
yummy (I just got Poser 4 at $139.) I've seen a couple of Fontagraphers over
there too, as well as.....

You can get some interesting effects with Painter Classic that I haven't been
able to duplicate as easily in PSP. I like using the Palette Knives tool,
particularly the dry brushes, on photos. I've got an example up at:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=31200&a=1256897
You can also get good effects with the add surface texture tool.

Ooops, I found it under special promotions. I have Painter Classic
and use it quite a bit--miss using layers, but I do use tracing paper
there some. However, the most efficient way for me to use it is to
create layers to use in PSP (I use it primarily to create textures for
Poser).

It was part of a broken Epson bundle, but it says it's the full
version...5.0 though, not 5.5. I thought maybe I'd need a patch, then be
able to upgrade to 6, but I don't see anything on the Corel site about
Painter upgrades/patches yet, and Metacreations just has referral links to
the companies that bought out the software.

Yup!:)
I talked to someone at Corel. The rebate offer *is* the upgrade, *and*, it's
valid through December 31, 2000.
I just bought, or recieved as gifts, a whole bunch of software, so I think
