100% PSP with no external plug-ins. Can be done in about 5 minutes or less
after you learn the technique.

Tutorial coming soon.

See: alt.binaries.paint-shop-pro for the samples.

I wish I could provide screen shots and a web page but this will have to do.

I am not a PSP expert and it is likely there are better ways to accomplish
what I have done. Feel free to share with others if you know of better ways
or shortcuts.

If anyone wants to build a real tutorial (with screen shots) for their web
site, please do so.

Prerequisites:
Download or otherwise obtain some surface texture graphic. In my post in the
binary group I will attach a couple of textures you can use. You can also
create your own texture very easily using PSP. I learned the technique from
a tutorial somewhere that I dont recall. I'll post the steps if anyone
wants.

Step 1: Find a nice picture you wish to turn into a peice of art. It's best
if it's a fair size picture. Colorful pictures seem to turn out better. Open
it in PSP and select Window> Duplicate. Close the original.

Step 2: Activate your picture and select Layer>Duplicate. Rename the new
layer "Detail". Change the Layer blend mode to Darken. Turn off the layer
visibility for both layers for now.

Step 3: Create a new raster layer named "Surface" and place it in between
your "backround" layer and your "detail" layer. Set the blend mode to
Multiply. Leave this layer active.

Step 4: Open a file containing the surface texture you wish to use. CTRL-A
to select the entire picture, CTRL-C to copy it to the clip board. Now go
back to your art work picture.

Step 5: You should have the "Surface" layer active. Paste as a new
selection and place the texture in the upper left corner. You can go
slightly out of the boundry if you wish. The goal here is to continue to
paste new selections and cover the entire layer by tiling the pasted
selections. Make sure you dont leave any space. WHen done press CTRL-D to
release any selection.

Step 6: Activate the "Background" layer and make it visible. At this stage
your picture should look like it now has the texture of your "Surface"
layer. If the texture is too fine, you can always change the texture to a
larger texture (or vice versa). Now to make the painting...

Step 7: With your background layer active, select Effects>Artistic
Effect>Brush Strokes. Select the Water Color preset. Tweak however you want.
Other presets make good looking results as well. Apply. Your picture should
now look like a watercolor painting on the surface you chose!

Step 8: For some it may look good enough as-is. IF you want more detail do
the following. Make your Detail Level visible. The picture should look
pretty good now! You can adjust the Detail layer blend mode to get more/less
detail.

I think I have all the steps correct. Let me know if you need more
explaination.

Your images, while cute, don't impress me.
They look like you write, that is, poorly, with little to no pride.

p.s. No, it's not a photo. It's just something I created with Freeware.

You, a youngin, a coffee drinker?

I find that difficult to believe. But after people tell me Jasc doesn't
really compose all the software they sell, anything is possible.

It's amazing what you can obtain from beautiful people that develops
fantastic, free software, isn't it? I see
Ron V. is simply amazed at what Ifran's Irfanview can do.

BTW If you're so concerned, I admitted to Joanne, in the comp-graphics
newsgroup, that I had to tweak these images with Paint Shop Pro, so
they'd be on topic in a PSP binary newsgroup. I could have done it just
as well with The Gimp, but that would be unfair.

And one last thing, Blaze. When I hear someone claim they purchased PSP,

Yes, free software is a good thing. But commercial software that is useful
and worth the price to an individual is also a good thing.

I agree, as long as this commercial software company isn't corrupt.
Then, I could care less how great their software is.

And furthermore, when I see someone bring my name up in the PSP binary

Consider your track record, little man. I'm sure people find you as
honest in this post as in any other.

But ask Joske - I'm sure she can confirm my lack of participation in
your troll fantasies. I have read the group two or three times - once
out of curiosity, and twice because of references to ongoing threads
there. I have never posted there beyond setting followups to Joske's
threads here.

Sorry to flaunt the truth in your face - but just do as you usually
do. Lie some more.

Well, big girl, it seems the people here can't learn how to use kill
filters, as you suggest they do. But you set a very poor example
yourself. So, if there's anyone to blame for "ruining" this newsgroup, I
point my finger at you.

Maybe that's why your attempt to attack me in the comp-graphics
newsgroup, failed, like all your others.

I suggest that if they find certain individuals distasteful,
disturbing or hurtful, that they consider using killfiles. I have also
explained - on numerous occasions - why I choose not to use them.

I am not here to set an example for anyone. I post as I choose - ask
Mike to explain free speech to you again. And you can blame me as much
as you want - given that the majority of sensible posters have sussed
you for what you are, it can only be to my credit.

It didn't fail, because it wasn't an attack. I don't consider fair
warning an attack - you are a poisonous cretin, and people deserve to
know what they are getting into should they choose to engage you.

As for me, I just love the fact that you can't resist responding to
me. What a little puppet you are - predictable in the extreme. And
it's all good - every time you open your mouth, you prove yourself to
the unsuspecting. Perhaps one day you will realize that you are your
own worst enemy (and not a very good troll, either) - you tip your
hand far too readily.

Keep it up - you are your own best warning.

Ah, but you don't. No pictures of me anywhere online, I'm afraid - and

People have always insulted one another here, so what else is new? I
watched Sally Beacham run Eleanor out of this newsgroup.

As for my lack of talent, I'm not ashamed what I can do, and post to
several newsgroups. But it's obviously embarrassing for you to post your
work.

Not the truth - your contentions (i.e. the words of a self proven
liar) with no proof attached. Given your track record, the safe bet is
always that you are lying yet again.

>People have always insulted one another here, so what else is new? I

Nonsense. You - as usual - saw what you chose to see. Sally posted
nothing more than what Mike posts here on a regular basis - that if
Eleanor didn't want to read it, no one was forcing her to. Funny how
you defend in Mike what you decry in others. Hypocritical as well as a
liar.

>As for my lack of talent, I'm not ashamed what I can do, and post to

Nope. I just (generally) choose not to. I have no need for the
approval or approbations of anyone on Usenet - if I am pleased with my
graphics play, that is sufficient. If my superiors are pleased with
the graphics work I do for them, that also is sufficient (but those
graphics belong to them, and it is not my business to use them outside
their intended purpose).

No, you don't. Any more than you "know" anything about graphics, about
Jasc, or about corruption. With your track record here, do you
seriously think anyone believes you? But go ahead - tell us how you
"know". Details will help - I've met enough people on this newsgroup
that can confirm whether you're right or wrong. Height, weight, colour
of eyes, colour of hair, birthmarks - go ahead, take your pick. Prove
one of your contentions, little man.

How can I possibly lie when the proof remains on Jasc's web site?
Didn't you hear the other user, Jeff, who was not pleased that Jasc was
selling software other than their own, but the site states not a single
word about it?

to find some other newsgroup to participate in. Where is that cruel LVS

I took HIS word because he seems to be much more a honest person than
you are. And for all I know, Jasc just added those tibits to cover their
behind.

Who knows, maybe they also fixed up the Tour of Paint Shop Pro to
Exclude the web publishing to Studio Avenue Paint Shop Pro can't do.

They pay me, in part, to do graphics (a small, but satisfying part).
They don't care how I do them, as long as the end product is
satisfactory for their needs. Most of them know nothing about art, the
printers know only what they need, and it's up to me to produce what
is required. You might understand these things if you were gainfully

Didn't Kris Zaklika, of Jasc Software, Inc., state, in this newsgroup,
that AfterShot was not developed by Jasc, but was purchased and sold
under the Jasc name?

And why is the PSP Photo Album software up to version 4 already?

Quite honestly, I'm rather confused what they actually develop, in
house. I look at the Credits in Paint Shop Pro, and all I see are
"Engineers" listed, with not a single "Programmer" in sight.

When an individual from Jasc Software, Inc. is allowed to threaten a
customer, via e-mail, and nothing is done about it, that's a form of
corruption.

Cute, Jackie. Maybe I'll send Kris's e-mails to Adobe. Maybe they can
use it in one of their advertisements how they don't treat their

What have I to be ashamed of? And what "evidence" have you provided?
Repeating lies does not give them any reality - it just makes you look
even more dishonest.

Yes - that's no surprise. Jasc's purchase was announced in the media;
hardly a coverup.

Because they've gone through three revisions to the original code? Bet
the next one will be version 5.

I know far more about how Adobe treats their customers than you
(actually being one helps). Look at Chris Cox - he's well known
(especially in his interactions with Timo) for being less than
judicious in his distaste. I suspect he'd email Kris a letter of
sympathy and understanding. ;-)

Now, c'mon puppet. Prove that anything you've said is not a lie, or

It states, on Jasc's web site, it is replacing AfterShot, so it must be
new software. Just seems really odd that a new version is released as
version 4.

Nothing at all. Again, it just seems a bit odd to group everyone as an
Engineer. Adobe, doesn't practice that.

I observed Mr. Cox. I did not see anyone complaining about him in the
Photoshop newsgroup, of him e-mailing threatening notices. Kris also
contacted at least on other participant in this newsgroup, with the
intent to tell this person off.

And you actually think this is funny.

Let me tell you that I as an enthusiastic new poster and foreign customer
did not think so at all when it happened to me with Jasc's Kris Zaklika.

You can patrol and stomp back and forth through this newsgroup to defend him
till doomsday and it still won't be funny and it still isn't right.

Joske, noone is arguing about your feelings towards Kris Zaklika. That is
your opinion and you have a right to it. Others don't share that opinion,
and also have the right to say so. Personally, I have the highest respect
for Kris, for his knowledge, and for the way he has treated customers. If
your perception causes you to have a differing view, so be it. If you feel
the need to jump in with your personal criticism of Kris every so often, go
right ahead. Newbies and lurkers will form their own opinions of him
regardless of what you post. Your posts only serve to help others form an
opinion of *you*.

I've personally seen him treat customers like trash, in this very
newsgroup. But you come and go often, so how would you know?

The majority of people that visit this newsgroup could care less about
anyone's opinion. They ask a question, they get an answer and leave.

I formed my opinion of you, Gail, when you fought with Nick, telling him
off, publicly, then telling him to take his reply to e-mail. What a
heavenly person you are.

So, he could care less about gender and trashes both males and females
equally. I guess that's gentleman like.

Absolutely. Uni prances about, lying about everything, and then gets
offended when people think he's a thief. "My PSP" can't do this, "My
PSP" doesn't have that - then he complains that people think "his PSP"
is probably a warez version? If you can't see the irony in that, you
are truly humour impaired.

Uni,

I don't work for JASC and I don't want to make this sound like an attack
because it isn't. But your understanding of the software business seems to
be very little. That's not a bad thing mind you but I'd like to point out a
couple of things.

> Didn't Kris Zaklika, of Jasc Software, Inc., state, in this newsgroup,

This is common practice. For example game companies do this sort of thing
all the time. If you look at almost any Activision game, it's produced by a
smaller company and distributed through Activision.

The benefit is for both the developer and the distributor. The developer
ususally gets a royalty and perhaps even some start up funding while the
distributor gets to add another 'notch' to their offerings. This is a legal
agreement between the two parties as to how much compensation and how much
credit is displayed etc. Neither party is getting screwed by this.

It wasn't my intention to 'decide' - I was just guessing as to what some

A more pertinent example would be the artistic effects in Photoshop.
A cursory examination of Help > About > Plug-in shows that the
effects came from Imageware Research and Development Inc. and the
technology was not developed in-house at Adobe. I expect few Adobe
customers care about this and most appreciate that Adobe took steps
to put the effects in the program, even if they had to be licensed.

As regards After Shot, it was originally a product acquired from
Sierra Imaging, who sold it as Image Expert. Development of the
product has moved to Jasc and the most recent beta version is
available for download here: http://www.jasc.com/pbeta/pspa/
After Shot is now know as Paint Shop Photo Album to reflect the
fact it is now fully a member of the Jasc product family, with
development being done in-house. Just to show how complex the
software business is, I might mention that some of the technology
in Image Expert was acquired by Sierra and not developed by them :)

I know what incident you were referring to you. What I meant by your
'fantasies' is that you interpreted that incident as my being 'afraid' of
Kris and 'swallowing my pride'. Those are your fantasies, i.e. how you
interpret the interaction, which of course is up to you. Kris and I have
been exchanging opinions about plugins long before you came to the
newsgroup, thus you have no idea what motivates anything I say to Kris (or
to anyone else for that matter). You can guess.. i.e. "fantasize", but
that's about it. This aside, you are right about one thing. None of this is
very important.

The real situation is quite the reverse. Three or four times a
year Gail comes to my house and beats me about the head with
every plug-in in her possession. If I don't show the proper
level of respect she threatens to fractalize me. Then I can do
nothing but submit. She wears a devil mask for this exploit
and I am required to don a T-shirt emblazoned with the words
"Fraktalz Rulez". I live in mortal fear and my children cower
in the basement whenever she comes visiting. To tell you the
truth, the children inhabit the basement most of the time
because that's where the television and video games are, but
it makes a better fantasy when I tell it differently and say

<Laugh> I just want to know why she doesn't visit me. I'll even wear
the T-shirt, but she can only beat me about the head with plugins that
I don't already own.

As for the kids, if she can keep them in the basement, that's good,
too. ;-)

Oh gosh, what *would* we do without the infallible Joske to tell us
what is *really* going on? Just what is the source of this received
wisdom that empowers you - and only you - to interpret what people
mean? Seems to me that you see everything through the meanspirited
focus of your own personal biases... but, unlike you, I could be
wrong.

Why am I beginning to suspect that you were a literature major, always
sucking the joy out of reading by earnestly expounding on the author's
"true" meaning?

You know Jackie, I killfile trolls. I also make it a pretty strict practice
to skip right by all these threads where you are waltzing with them, and
shining a reality-check spotlight/flashlight onto their disgusting tiresome
behaviors. Generally the instant I see who you are quoting, there's just no
real reason for me to read further. Especially when it's all absolutely
nothing new here, or of any value to me whatsoever. Consequently, I've never
seen any of this weight stuff?

Somehow that word Piggy (pork lover that I am) caught the corner of my eye,
and I allowed myself to be sucked into reading this rather unending tome.
Should I ascertain here, that a woman who would have to gain at least twenty
frigging pounds to even be considered slender - is actually being ongoing
harangued as "fat"? Okay, now THAT is really funny. Also pretty typical,
considering the truly desperate pathetic state of its source.

Never though I'd actually be enjoying a laugh over any of this swill. Get
it? Swill, piggy - sometimes I just slay me. :) Excuse the interruption. I
only stopped by, to OT the thread.

You haven't missed much. ;-) Long story short, somehow Uni "knows"
that I am fat. Been going on forever. <lol> Now he's got krustov on
that bandwagon, too.

<laugh> Shhh... you're going to let my secret out (and it's only ten
pounds they want me to gain - the big concern being that rifle and
full kit is more than 60 per cent of my body weight <g>). What's
really funny is that, as an army officer, I have one of the few
occupations that will stand me on a scale twice a year. The only time
they ever told me to lose weight (five pounds, as I recall), I was
twenty-one days postpartum and breastfeeding. ;-) After I finished
"educating" the medic about what I thought of that, they took the
notation off my file.

[Of course, my thirteen year old would be happy if I gained weight -
then I'd stop stealing her jeans. ;-)]

But the thing for me has always been not a question of any sort of
hurt feelings - I'm not fat, so Uni just proves himself a liar
continually - but concern for others. I've met some of the people
here, but by no means most of them. For all I know, some of them could
be overweight and sensitive about it - how many of them are out there
cringing every time he makes a fat joke at my "expense"?

>Never though I'd actually be enjoying a laugh over any of this swill. Get

Thank you for that. Should have done it myself, but heat of the
moment, etc. I think I've vented just about all the spleen I can
tolerate for the nonce - the idiots just have a way of pushing my
blood pressure into the danger zone every so often. (Of course,
"someone" will take that as an indication of a hypertension problem -
it's a metaphor, folks. My BP last week was 90 over 60, low as is
normal for me. I hit 120 over 80 once in my life, during my second
pregnancy, and I was hospitalized for it. Satisfied? <g>)

Playing with silly people is different than lowering myself to their level
in order to "teach them a lesson".

I don't care what silly people learn or don't learn. I just like to play
with them.
