Gea,

I don't know how "nice" the samples are, but I wrote an illustrated
article about some of the obvious and not so obvious joys and challenges
of flower photography at

www.cliffshade.com/dpfwiw/flower.htm

They can be tricky little buggers, especially if color accuracy is a big
issue. The short answer is, shade and still air.

BTW, a lot of self-proclaimed "serious" photographers consider flowers
kind of passe. We all shoot them, of course -- they can be awfully hard
to resist -- but we don't always admit to it. Interestingly, you're
getting more "out of the closet" links than I'd have guessed around
here.

Hm, interesting idea... I must tell it to one of my friends - he likes
scanning objects like that (BTW anyone may get more flowers from his page at
http://www.ted.newmail.ru/Flora.html and some of them in a seamless form at
http://www.ted.newmail.ru/PatternsDL.html) but he always had to turn off the
light in a room ;-)

You can also get some really nice background effects by laying a piece
of handmade paper over the top of the object, rice and mulberry papers
work especially nicely. The paper "cups" the object giving it some nice
depth and shading. I've also used an old shirt box, the kind that you
can buy around Christmas for wrapping gifts. I bought some that were
plain white on the outside, took it apart and reversed the gluing so
that the white was now on the inside. The box is slightly larger than
my scanner, I can put the object on the glass then cover with the box.

Seems like that sort of scanning objects is more often applied than I
expected. I normally do it when I need a seamless background consisting from
many small objects like leaves, coins, stuff like that. In general, all you
need to convert them into seamless background is place some on scanner (make
sure they will be scanned completely, no edges or parts should extend over
the scanning area) and scan (often with scanner open so the cover do not
ruin the objects); some holes and unavoidable solid color area around the
irregular group of objects are easy to select with something like magic wand
and even easier to "ignore" with layer merge range controls so after that
all you need is duplicate the layer, offset it in a "wrap around" mode (then
adjust blend ranges if you work this way) so the duplicates of the leaves
"cover" the holes between the originals, then repeat duplicating\offsetting
until you cover all of the holes. As a result, you get the seamless pattern
made from many small objects within minutes. Some "mirroring" of layers in
process may decrease visual "repetitiveness", and adding some drop shadow
between them increase depth. Hm, let me see if I have an example at my
hand... ok, the one used at http://photoshop.msk.ru/as/metalwork.html (see
"before" example cell) is somewhat dull but it was made out from *one*
single leaf ;-) ok, another one from my desktop:
http://photoshop.msk.ru/seamleaves.jpg (it's too bright because it was
supposed to be used with black text).

BTW if someone don't have an offset filter for wrap-around offsetting, be my
(and Linda's) guest and get it from
http://www.playingwithfire.com/color/ilya_tiler.html ;-)

PS I once placed a cat on scanner but resulting pattern wasn't particularly
nice...
