Corel eliminated Jasc's Brwser in favor of their own browser feature,
which is practically nothing. I tried both PSP X and Ultimate and
deleted both from my computer after one use. Fortunately, the new
versions did not reorganize any of my folders or scatter photos all
over the place as some posters have indicated in this group. I
guess I was lucky.
Gshatterhand responds:
At this point I would dearly love to delete Ultimate and go back to
PSP 9. But I've just bought a computer using the new Windows 7. I've
been told PSP 9 will not work with the new Windows. And, so far, none
of us here can get PSP 9 to work with the new windows.
treker, were you able to stick with an earlier version of PSP because
you don't have Windows 7?
If so, what will you do if you ever do use the new Windows?
> Gshatterhand responds:
PSP 9.01 works okay in Vista (No Aeroglass or whatever it's called,
obviously, not something I'd use anyway) So thought I've not used it in
Win 7, I do use it on my Laptop under Vista okay.
As I understand it from an IT guy, Win 7 is just Vista with a few changes,
and he's quite annoyed that MS are making big charges for what he calls a
"fix some of the crap in Vista release." (He's not against charging a
nominal fee for updates and fixes, but they are charging like it's a new
version).
There are a couple of minor things, the most notable being, if you have
multiple printers installed not able to change between them from within
PSP 9... However that's easily sidestepped by setting a Default printer
from outside PSP in Windows itself.
The simple answer is, get out your PSP 9 disk or files and install the
damn thing on Win 7, it either will or will not work, if it doesn't, then
uninstall it.

The MS adviser only mentioned 4 items that might not work or will not. Nero 6 I know wont work in Vista so no surprise Avg will no doubt have an update The other two probably don't matter
PSP 9 and PSP X are very similar. X really is written on the 9 codebase,
and is the last of the JASC original code. Everything later than X is
"Paint Shop Pro PHOTO", and is NOT Paint Shop Pro anymore. Using any of
Corels products for photography is insanity. After Adobe bought up
PixMantic (Raw Shooter) I chose to buy into the mud hut. I now use PS CS4
Extended with my photography and 3D. However, PSP 9 and X still do certain
things easier and actually better than any version of Photoshop so I
continue to use them for much of my 2D graphics work.
I haven't even tried to install PSP 9 in Win 7 yet. PSP X installs and
works just fine in Win 7 Ultimate 64 bits. As a 32 bit application, of
course. However, I prefer using my XP Pro x64 and have set up to dual boot
with XP x64 the default choice in the boot manager. PSP 9 and X run fine in
XP x64.
Now, I have no idea what your problem is with PSP X. Granted, Corel did
make some changes to it aside from the obvious cosmetic differences. They,
as expected, did some pretty stupid things. But they can be countered with
a little effort immediately after installing it. I own PSP 5, 7, 8, 9 and
X. I did try PSPP x1 and x2 long ago. PSPP abandoned the browser entirely
in favor of the new "disorganizer". Corel licensed the same organizer in
use in Adobe Lightroom 1. Yes, they licensed it from Adobe. And have been
careful to avoid mentioning that fact. That organizer is so bad I refuse to
use anything that employs it.
A lot of people that hate the organizer still use PSPP. they just turn off
the organizer completely and use Explorer as their browser.
Image types, file extensions, and default programs for opening images.
Well, you've got a mess going on there for sure. One thing you have to
realize is that everything that is called a PSP file is done so because PSP
is made the default program for opening that file. So, even though a TIF or
PNG are not PSPimage formats, PSP sees them as PSP images.
Me, I always keep show ALL file types and DO show filename extensions *ON*.
Always. I hate not seeing exacly what I've got.
Corel has moved their product to insulate the user from the System. And
brainwash them into feeling safe and OK with that.
Backward compatibility. You have the option to save PSPImage files with
backward compatibility. I do this with X to save files PSP 9 can use.
This post may NOT help you all that much. However, seeing so many posts
from you in a month over simply not being familiar with your system or your
software well enough to effect useful setup gave me the thought to have a
shot at it.
McG.
And a fine shot it was, McG. Thank you! I appreciate your insight.
