Everyone compares PSP & PS, but isn't the real comparison between PSP & Painter? It seems like these are much closer to each other wrt who they're targetting. Or am I missing something?

Anyone out there own both? How do they compare?

Well not really Painter is geared for more the painter (canvas media) and
not the photo edit group. Painter is among the best at what it is designed
to do and that is paint as close to real painting as possible. I have both
and use both (also PS 5.5). I don't post my work with painter on my site due
to the fact it is geared towards PSP. Painting in PSP is a real challenge
when compared to painter but can be very rewarding also. Later versions of
Painter seem to have tried to move more to web/photo work however. I've not
followed it much past version 6 as it is now owned by Corel. These are just
my personal observations on the products and may not be what others feel are
correct.

I must assume you really don't mean Painter. Painter and PSP are
aimed at two totally different users. Painter is more for the artist,
creating tools which duplicate the traditional artist tools, such as
oil paintbrush, water color, pencil drawing, palette knife, and so on.

PSP is aimed more to photography and web art.

Painter also uses some strange methods of achieving it's ends. It has
a very high learning curve.

And so help me, I believe it has a 'Spin, Crash & burn when Ron's
almost finished' subroutine that never fails!

I love it and hate it with equal feelings.

Fair enough. I just wasn't sure how comparable the two products were. When I read the review on C|Net they talk about how it's a good compliment to PS, etc. When they compare Painter to other products they list Illustrator & Canvas Pro. Clearly a different market.

Thanks for the clarification.

thankyou for mentioning the learning curve thing, I was begining to
think I was a little slow in the head, crash? I had to stop using it
until I get around to reinstalling, cause it gets big black rectangles
on the work that won't go away........weird program. Makes PS seem
easy.
