Explorer misreading PSP images

For some reason Microsoft Explorer, in icon view, is reading any Paint
Shop Pro images that have the extension "psp" as "Microsoft Pocket
Streets Pushpins" images. (I can still open the images using PSP 9 or
PSP Ultimate.)

When I try to open such an image using Explorer, the message is "You
are attempting to open a file of type "Microsoft Pocket Streets
Pushpins'(psp.) to view this file copy it to your mobile device and
open it with Microsoft Pocket Streets. If you still want to view this
file, click OPEN WITH, otherwise click CANCEL."

When I click OPEN WITH, the message is "Windows cannot open this file.
To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it.
Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually
select from a list of programs on your computer."

Not being able to open them in Explorer is kind of a hassle. I'm using
PSP 9 in WIndows XP on one drive, and PSP Ultimate (when I have to) on
Windows 7 on another drive. I usually prefer to use Explore to open
images in PSP Ultimate because the Organizer is such a dog.

If I want to try and tell windows to use another program to open the
images, which version of PSP saves images with a "psp" extension? (I
should know this but I'm not sure.)

Some of my images were saved with PSP 7, some with PSP 9. If the
images with a "psp" extension were saved with PSP 7, I no longer have
PSP 7 on the computer, and can't tell Windows that is the program I
used to create them.

Whew! These difficulties take some work to describe! I hope I
explained it clearly. Any PSP saints out there care to comment on this
issue?

PSP was used up to and including PSP 7 AE.
any Psp or psp photo will open them Your problem if windows file assosiations.
Open Psp 12 Ultamate go to File > preferances > file Format associations. Scroll down the list untill you come to PSP Animation shop (*psp) and check that. Hopfully this will set the assosiation in windows.

Click the "Chose Program at the bottom "
At that point click the browse button (if Vista works the same as XP) then find the PSP X2 exe and check the always use the selected program to open this type of file. The ok out

In PSP 9, I went to File>Preferences>File Format Associations, and
clicked on PSP Animation Shop. That solved the problem in PSP 9. (I
haven't tried PSP Ultimate yet. I've been working mostly in PSP 9.)

Microsoft Explorer no longer shows any “Microsoft Pocket Streets
Pushpin” images. The images now show up correctly as PSP images, and I
can open them using either PSP or Explorer.

There are many types of file; there are a limited number of three-character
combinations for file extension. As far as I know, the only software that
will handle a .psp file created by Paint Shop Pro is Paint Shop Pro itself.
Apparently, on your system the default association for that file extension
was a different format of file. It appears that you got appropriate advice
about associating software with that file type for all of Windows, and have
resolved the problem.

But, there's a good chance that you may encouter similar difficulties with
some other file extension in the future -- but, too, now you know how to
deal with it when you do.
