The topic is the question. I am using GIMP for a class project and I need to save in a 16-bit format. When I export my image I select TIF>export and my compression options are: None, LZW, Pack Bits, Deflate and JPEG.

I have read the manual for the different compression rates but I am still lost.

In my professor's video he is using a PC and saving as a .BMP and that might be the difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gimp-2.8.x does not save in 16 bit format. For 16 bit formats, use git
master: gimp-2.9.1.

Is that version available now?

It's available now, but you'll have to compile it, as well as babl and gegl,
and update libraries as required. If you are not familiar with building
from source (tarballs and git) you'll have quite a bit of learning to do
before you reach your goal.
