I have been using GIMP 2.6 on my Mac running 10.6.8 for a long time. I
recently installed 2.8, and the difference in the speed of response is
amazing, and not in 2.8's favor.

Example: when I choose the "rotate" tool and drag the grid, in 2.6, it
rotates in "real time", while with 2.8 the response is so slow and jerky
that it is unusable. Other operations are similarly different in speed.

Is this inherent in 2.8, or do I have something improperly configured?

Both versions are running under XQuartz 2.7.2, if that matters.

If you have color management turned on in 2.8, turn it off, and see what
happens. This is likely a known bug that is being worked on. Turn it off
in Preferences.

In article <brKdnaTUdPdtjETS...@giganews.com>,
It was on. turned it off. Quit and restarted. No change -- it's still
too slow to use.

Disable color managed display in Edit --> Preferences --> Color Management
and you will have a much faster Gimp 2.8

Stick around for gimp-2.8.2. You'll feel much better about things then.

Good to know. Even though I only used it a little, 2.8 has some features
I like better.

did you try gimp-2.8.4? The 'rotate' problem was fixed a long time ago.

Yes thanks, that version is way better.... not optimal (it is not so fluid) but
usable (see my other post) ....

I understand your problems. Gimp is making a transition from the 2.x series
to the 3.x series. The 2.8.x series introduces single window mode, and it
uses much more gegl. You might want to keep up with gimp.org for the next
update to the 2.8.x series... At this point, I would guess it will be more
than a few months down the road... and I'm only guessing.
