The most recent update on the main page of the GIMP website is dated
2009-10-09. I remember reading about a problem with the webserver months
ago, and that the website was running on a backup server. Is the website
still having a problem, or is there just no new update?

There are still problems (e.g. no automatic updates yet, someone has
to run make on the server to get the changes from git), but the site
is maintained again. And 2.6.8 is listed now.
