Hi,
I got some clip art that are jpg files with a white background. I was able to add a transparency channel and started to use the erase tool to chnage the white background to transparency, is thier a way to set the fill color to transparency and just use the paint bucket to chnage the white to transparency?????

DEL or Edit->Clear sets the selection to transparent, if the layer has
an alpha-channel, - otherwise to the background-color.

If I understand you correct, I would use "Color > Color to transparency"
menu item for that. It's straight forward an just one click away.

Be sure that your image has an alpha-channel (you can toggle it by right
clicking on background layer in layer panel and choosing the menu voice).
Select by color or with the magic wand (or as you wish) and delete the
selection.

that can give you a lot of problems.
- all the white colors are gone. Not only in the background.
- a lot of colors seems to have some white in it. A lot of other colors are
also affected using this method.

You can also use magic wand/ fuzzy select tool and then delete that part.
I save and work with my pictures as .png so you can see the transparency
parts.
