Is that 3 pixels by 3 pixels or 3 apples x 3 oranges or what?
For windows easy enough to get old versions, hunt through
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/GIMP%20%2B%20GTK%2B%20
(stable%20release)/
thats above tinyurled

linux, could be a problem, you would have to compile probably against
some old packages.
FWIW a quick test.
A Win7 VM with Gimp 2.8.4
Made an image with an alpha channel. Exported as bmp to both A8R8G8B8
with compatibility and without.
A linux Gimp 2.8.2 - both open ok
A WinXP SP2 VM & Gimp 2.6.11, - no compatibility opened but "with
compatibility" lost the alpha channel.

File viewers, Things like XnViewMP would not show the alpha in the image
but would show it separately if required. A linux viewer evince showed
compatibility but crashed with no compatibility. FireFox browser gave a
very strange result for both.

Just out of interest, why Gimp version 2.4.x ?
