I asked a few weeks ago if there was a FAQ (thanks for the response,
BTW, Erkki) but this does not seem to be covered, so...

Can you recommend some kind of software to help a beginner start off
with animation? My son is 15 and we've got an older p600. He's rather
interested in this sort of thing and I'm wondering what the two of us
can play around with to get started.

I've made animated gifs using Corel (photopaint, if IIRC).

Thanks in advance for any direction on this subject.

Hi again!

I think I'll maybe add it...

[posted this earlier - but didn't get through. Second attempt]

Try going to any of the big chain bookstores (if there are any near you).
Most sell import graphics magazines from the UK - most of these come with
cover cds that usually feature some decent (but older version) of software
packages. These magazines typically run around $13USD. If that isn't
practical, take a look at some of the links I listed below. These are free
programs that are great to play with - most should work on an older
machine. My main machine is only a P733 (w/512 megs of ram) and most of
these run fine.

These people had huge crowds at SIGGRAPH last year.
Being sandwiched between the SGI and Nvidia booths didn't hurt either.
Looked like a competent starter package ($300 convention price) though
I've never used it.

Umm, from my experience, its hard to get out off........It may have
improved of late..you cannot export your work out to other higher
level programs, so what ever you do in it is it.

Why would you need to export to another program? All you need is right
there. The best Character Animation tool available, and for only $300.

Try it.

What are you referring to that is not exportable? It renders in common file
formats. (TGA, etc.) I guess you're referring to the project files.

Like I said, you don't NEED them to be exportable. If you want to work with
a higher level program, do so. Personally, I like to model and animate
using the same software. I can't afford to model in MAX, then export to
Softimage for animation, or whatever.

If you want the best animation software around for the price, get AM.
