Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has attended the Computer Arts
course at the Academy of Art college. I was thinking of enrolling in
this program and was hoping to get some feedback from current or alumni
students. Thanks. :)

Hey Sam,

I'm a senior at the Academy right now. Hrm...where to start. I've often
wished that i went to Cal Arts instead, as i hear tons of great things about
their program...but none the less, the Academy hasn't been a bad experience.
I've had some incredible teachers and some lousy ones. Coming from the
viewpoint of attending for animation: The biggest problem i've had at the
school is the lack of instruction on ANIMATION....they like to teach
software instead. However, they are now overhauling the animation department
and have a new director. The 2d animation department is getting bigger and
they just added a ton of courses, and are about to add a stop motion section
(of course...after I graduate...dammit). Soooooooo....if you wanna animate
on the computer...take all the life drawing and traditional animation
classes you can the first 2 or 3 years, then get into the computer later on.
You need to learn all the basics before you touch a computer....as they are
fond of reminding us...it's just a tool...just like a pencil. I made the
mistake of getting way to tied up in learning a package and not enough time
animating, and now i'm having to bust ass to tighten up my animation.

The are also building out the gaming courses...there are a lot of new ones.
The illustration department is pretty incredible, but i can't say the same
for the computer graphics i've seen. It's like anywhere...there are stars,
but most people are average...it's up to you to be the star.

Overall it's a good school...tons of equiptment and knowledgable teachers
that work in the industry (GREAT HOOKUPS). So to sum it up ... this school
is what you make of it. . . if you wanna put the time in, you'll get the
support...if you know who to talk to. Come in with the attitude that you are
gonna have to do it for yourself...not that they will guide you through the
whole process. And talk to your teachers from day one...that's your greatest
resource at the Academy. The teachers i've had in the last 2 semesters are
already proving invaluable and will be a great job resource after
graduation. If you have any questions...feel free to email me.
