A few months ago people posted catalogs of several cheap ($10) font
CD-ROMs, and a few of them had MICR. However they were only in Type 1 and
TrueType formats. If you're looking for PCL bitmap fonts, you may have a
hard time finding it.

I still have the CD-ROM messages archived here somewhere, if outlines are
OK.

C'mon....this thing has been around for years and years...just about every
little financial and check printing program (shareware, freeware and
commercial) has got a copy of it. It's not like it's copyrighted by each
of these people like their documentation states....because the font is a
standard!! The banks require it!! If you look at each of them through a font
editor, they will all look alike!!! So who's gonna break down and tell me
where I can find this....non-poscript version....for HP series printers.
Huh?? I appreciate the help

Just because there is a standard does not mean there is no copyright or
patent. Standards implemented by the ISO (International Standards
Organizations) are generally copyrighted. Devices using standards can
indeed by patented.

According to Wikipedia, there are actually two different MICR fonts.
Different nations use one or the other font. Which font to use is
determined by where the check will be process, in which nation the
processing bank is located.

A check printed with a MICR font cannot be processed by a bank unless
the font has been printed with a MICR printer. This requires ink that
contains iron and magnetization of each character so that it can be read
even if obscured by being over-printed.

See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_ink_character_recognition>.

Are taxes too high in the U.S.? Check the bar graph
at <http://www.rossde.com/taxes/trickling.html> to see.

There are two standards : one for the US, Canada, UK, and the other one
for Europe and others.

Indeed, the MICR standard is around, and several fonts may be passed
around as "free". Problem is, we are not talking about a personal
program here, but an interface to banks, which are not tolerant of
haphazard made up checks.

A company like below has tested and re-tested the solution until it
became very reliable, and fully compliant to current standards.

You may want to consider that a series of bounced checks will probably
cost a lot more than a piece of software, not to mention your
reputation.
