Sorry to read about this. At Match Software, we keep codes since 1999. But it is not as simple : often enough, customers are unable to specify the purchase year or any significant detail that would help locating the code. This happens most often because the person who bought changed company, or the company changed address and name... Besides, keeping over ten years of archives is often difficult, as systems and applications changes, and it is not always possible to port data.
Upon download, we do advise customers to create a backup CD and save the code onto it, but we keep receiving request for codes, because someone saved only the executable and not the message containing the code. I am in the process of implementing a code-free system, but it is easier said than done. Not to mention that still, some people will never create a backup, and cry baby when their computer crashes. We are human. Not being perfect is our nature...
