Please clarify. What might be a context where you put text in a table
and tables don't work? Do you mean that you need to set text in a
tabular manner but you cannot use any table formatting? This sounds like
you are restricted (somehow) to plain text but can control the font
used. It's possible that there is a better approach than using a
monospace font, which should really be the last resort.

This suggests that there is the implied restriction that the advance
width of bold face characters must be equal to the advance width of
regular face characters. Right?

What font might that be? Note that some fonts have a slashed glyph (with
"/" rather than "\" over "0") by default but a non-slashed glyph
optionally available, via OpenType features. This can be somewhat
hidden. For example, Consolas has a slashed zero by default, and using
the OpenType feature "zero" does not change this, oddly enough, but with
"ss07", you get a non-slashed glyph, and with "ss08", you get a "0"
without a slash but with a dot inside it.
