From time to time, I need to put text in a table and have it all line up
in situations where tabs and tables just don't work.

One common situation is a list of meeting times:

Day Date Times
Mon 9/13 9:30-11:30
Wed 10/15 10:00-12:00
Thu 11/03 8:00- 9:00

Here's what I've tried:

Bitstream Vera Sans Mono: This is my favoprite so far.

Courier New. This looks a little too "technical".

Lucida Console: Very similar to Bitstream, but bold is wider.

Arial Monospaced: Good, but the bold is wider.

QuickType Mono: My next cjoice, but the bold is wider.

Andale Mono: OK. I don't like the dot in the zero and the bold is wider.

Anonymous: Too big and I don't like the "\" through the zero.

Any other suggestions?

Please clarify. What might be a context where you put text in a table
and tables don't work? Do you mean that you need to set text in a
tabular manner but you cannot use any table formatting? This sounds like
you are restricted (somehow) to plain text but can control the font
used. It's possible that there is a better approach than using a
monospace font, which should really be the last resort.

This suggests that there is the implied restriction that the advance
width of bold face characters must be equal to the advance width of
regular face characters. Right?

What font might that be? Note that some fonts have a slashed glyph (with
"/" rather than "\" over "0") by default but a non-slashed glyph
optionally available, via OpenType features. This can be somewhat
hidden. For example, Consolas has a slashed zero by default, and using
the OpenType feature "zero" does not change this, oddly enough, but with
"ss07", you get a non-slashed glyph, and with "ss08", you get a "0"
without a slash but with a dot inside it.

See DejaVu Sans Mono at
<http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/index.php?title=Download>. The Roman,
bold, Italic, and bold Italic are all the same width. The lower-case l,
upper-case I, and numeral 1 are easily distinguished from each other.
However, the lower-case l looks a little strange (more strange than it
does in Trebuchet MS); and the zero has a dot inside to distinguish it
from the upper-case O (Oh).

I disagree about Courier New. Instead of technical, it looks like
something from an old-fashioned typewriter. I used it in Word when
creating letters to be mailed (postal mail, not E-mail) to make the
recipients think I might have actually used a typewriter. Today, I use
Verdana since typewriters are rarely used.

Are taxes too high in the U.S.? Check the bar graph
at <http://www.rossde.com/taxes/trickling.html> to see.

I downloaded the font package. It was odd that the README file, which
appears to be a Word doc, had no extension.

Once I got past that, I saw that it is based on the Bitstream Vera
fonts. Since I already have those, why would I want these?

I agree. "Technical" was the only word that came to mind.

I like "Letter Gothic EGG" - can be downloaded here:

It is stored as a .hqx file. No idea whether .hqx and the resulting .sit
file can be decoded by anything else than a Mac. The decoded font files
are PostScript Type 1 fand TTF (TrueType). The accompanying docs say
that if you need a DOS / Win version, you should contact the authors. No
idea whether their email addresses are still working...

Liberation Mono (https://fedorahosted.org/liberation-fonts/) has got the
advantage of metric compatibility with Courier New.

Consolas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolas) looks also quite nice.

You may want to have a look at the Monospace category at the site below :
