Hi,
pardon my asking here rather than a.b.f,
my server doesn't serve the binaries.

I would like to identify the font used in the body text
in this Google book:

<http://tinyurl.com/ydkxjpc>
or
<http://books.google.com/books?id=mD3XAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_v2_summary_r&cad=0>

I would like to find a very similar font usable in LaTeX.

Thanks
Jeff Higgins

Take a look at DeVinne BT.

At Bowfin Printworks, I ran the serif font identifier. It might be one
of these two:

Century Expanded
<http://bowfinprintworks.com/SerifGuide/sample.php?id=12&sample=full>

DeVinne
<http://bowfinprintworks.com/SerifGuide/sample.php?id=6&sample=full>

If you don't agree, go to <http://bowfinprintworks.com/index.html> and
try it yourself. Given the publication date of 1896, exclude 20th and
21st century fonts.

Don't ask "Why is there road rage?" Instead, ask
"Why NOT Road Rage?" or "Why Is There No Such
Thing as Fast Enough?"

Century.

Go to http://new.myfonts.com/search/%28scotch+roman%29/fonts/ and
examine the various samples on that page. Look in particular at the
lowercase t to limit your choices.

In setting the page to match the color of the sample, you'll have to add
a bit of letterspacing and probably turn off kerning to open up the type.

Century (or similar) was popular in science books at that time.

Some time ago I made a design for a book about evolution and decline of diversity. I wanted it to have a feel of the first edition of 'Origin of Species'. Closest match I could find was Century 731 BT Alt. (BT = Bitstream)

http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/century-731/

There is diversity allright in Century family and not all are suitable for body text. Especially some ITC versions are horrible.
