Hello there,

I'm kind of new to the whole WINE thing. Is there some script or
anything to copy DLLs that work fine in WINE from a Windows
installation (any version, as my university has an MSDNAA subscription
which allows me to get licenses for any Windows version) into WINE, and
register them?
I'd like to do that as I read that it sometimes fixes compatibility
problems.. and I'd rather know now how I could possibly overcome them,
than when I actually run into such a problem.

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

Wine is getting better every day. Most applications work these days. You will
probably find that your applications work without the need for native dlls.
I think it is better to run using the Wine provided dlls, and report any
compatibility problems that you are having, rather than masking the problem
by using native dlls. This may make it more likely that we get fixes, which
will benefit everybody.

Regards,

Mark.

If used that way, installing windows dll's will causes more
compatibility problems that are a lot harder to solve (except by
starting again of course).

Do not do this and only use window dll's if indicated, for example on
http://appdb.winehq.org/

I should have followed the guidelines: Never ask linux people for help.
All you get is elitist answers put in the wild by some random guy.
Whatever. I'm gonna wait for responses from mac guys. Those actually
tend to read what options have already been ruled out.

Look, wine is what it is. Its not perfect, but sometimes it works, and
sometimes it doesn't.

If you want full compatibility use VMware and a legal (or not) copy of
windows.

If you stick with wine, its not being maintained by a ton of
programmers: Just a few. Its not great either. It didn't work beyond
simple apps for me.

Adding dlls is as likely to break something else as fix a problem.

I'm sorry if you don't like the anmswer, neither do I, but its the only
answer I've got.

And as far as mac guys go: the answer will always be 'if apple didn't
write it, its crap: spend the money on what Apples does' leastways thats
all they ever said to me.

In short the usenet is full of wankers.

The PC ones saya 'reinstall everything' the mac guys say 'pay someone to
reinstall everything' and the linux guys say 'write it yourself'

Then don't use Wine. Simple. Or go with the Linux philosophy (see my sig).

Neither do I, but I'm not going to be offensive about it. (Then again, I have
everything from Windows 3.1 up to 2003 Server.)

Oops. Wrong one. "Do it yourself." That's it.
