I am running MacMAME v0.103u2 on Mac OS X v10.4.10 on a dual G5 system.
When I am in a game and hit the TAB key, it brings up the normal
looking configuration panel. Selecting an input option brings it to
where I would normally hit the key that I want to assign -- but MacMAME
never responds, no matter which keys I press. The only thing it
responds to is ESC, which aborts the key assignment (setting it to
"None", or if it's already none then setting the default value).
It looks like MacMAME is going to be pretty useless to me until I can
figure this out. Any suggestions?

It turns out when you are entering a key setting into MacMAME it
doesn't respond immediately, you have to wait a few seconds for it to
accept the key. I wasn't waiting. (I'm sure earlier versions of
MacMAME didn't work this way.)
Now I figured it out, I can use my HotRod joystick again, I'm happy.
Sorry to have bothered anyone.
