Some key for CTRL like ESC for META?

Is there like a modifier key that you could hit that would behave the
same way as ESC?

The reason for asking is that my left hand is really suffering from
having to press CTRL and then the character at the same time. I would
like to hit something and then release that button and then hit the key.
