weird artifacting in kubuntu

I'm using xemacs on kubuntu 10.10.
The problem I have is that I will be typing away in xemacs. There
will be times where the cursor doesn't seem to refresh the line after
a key stroke and I'll be left with two cursor blocks and the old
characters on the line. I can keep typing and one cursor block will
move but the other one will stay there and most of the time what I'm
typing won't appear. The only way to refresh is to minimize and then
restore the window. Then everything is there just like I typed.
Is there something I can do to fix this?
