Description: Telecommunications digest. (Moderated)

Caller ID Device [Telecom]
A while back I asked about a device that allows blocking numbers using CID, much like the old Radio Shack CID did. I lost the site address.

Classic phone booth still in service [Telecom]
I saw a classic telephone booth today, still in service. It had the folding door, light, fan with switch, small seat, small table, and a directory (and of course a phone). It was located in the waiting room of the Princeton NJ train station (note--not the Princeton Jct station). The waiting room is only open... more »

Google Voice and Reciprocal Compensation on NPR [Telecom]
[link] ***** Moderator's Note ***** This is a good introduction to the ways that the reciprocal compensation rules can be used to benefit certain classes of traffic. CLECs are incentivized to serve "receive only" lines, i.e., lines which seldom make outgoing calls, so as to tip the compensation... more »

Shrinking directories
I just noticed when "Dex" was left in my apartment building entrance that Dex yellow pages seem to be about the same size - ~2.5 inches thick - but the white pages continues to get smaller. My 2009-2010 white pages are a third the size of the same book issued in the fall of 2007: it's only about an inch thick.... more »

IETF Draft Memo on legacy networks [Telecom]
The Internet Engineering Task Force is considering interactions between VoIP and the PSTN: Mass-Calling Events and autodialers figure prominently in a new Internet-Draft memo. In the context of this draft, the PSTN is a legacy network. (_*NOW*_ how old do you feel? ;-) ) Abstract The IETF PCN Working Group has continued its work investigating pre-... more »

In the US and Canada it's time to "fall" back [Telecom]
This Sunday November 1 the US and Canada will revert to standard time. At 02:00 time will be adjusted to one hour earlier. Some various recorded time announcements: *----------------------------- -*---------------------------- --------------------------* * WWV: | +1 303 499 7111 *... more »

White Pages may fall victim of technology [Telecom]
Booster seats. Door stops. Fodder for papier-mache projects. It seems those thick phone books that land on most folks' doorsteps each year get used for just about everything except locating phone numbers. If some state and local lawmakers have their way, however, even those uses would go by the wayside.... more »

FairPoint stock price falls after delisting [Telecom]
PORTLAND, Maine - The stock price of FairPoint Communications Inc. has fallen to just over a dime a share after the company was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. The ticker symbol of the North Carolina-based company was changed from FRP to its new over-the-counter listing of FRCMQ after it filed for... more »

Appeals court says swearing in text messages isn't a crime [Telecom]
"A 16-year-old California boy dumped by his high school girlfriend didn't violate a state obscenity law by using four-letter words in anguished text messages to his ex, an appellate court ruled this week. The boy, identified by his initials in the ruling, was convicted by a juvenile court judge in Chico, California, of sending threatening or... more »

911 flaw delayed help to attack victim [Telecom]
The following is a disturbing story. The Newark NJ Star Ledger reported that the victim of an attack dialed 911 for help, but apparently the 911 center was unable to determine the location of the call. It was not clear whether the 911 center had the technology to do so, or [if] there was a flaw [in] it. Perhaps others more familiar... more »
