Anybody have the same thing happen? I've e-mailed USR, but probably will
not get an answer until Monday due to Thanksgiving. Anybody know if I can
get code to downgrade it back to what it was? I think it was originally
dated from 1999. The control center program can flash from a image on
disk.

If you haven't downloaded and installed the new driver/inf for your
upgraded modem, you should do that. Get 00568603.inf at the link below.
That probably won't help your connection speeds. There is a button in
Control Center that allows you to reset the modem to Factory Defaults.
Try that and load it to the modem, to see if that helps. After reset,
and installing the new .inf file, try a connection using DUN rather
than Control Center. Disregard the date listed for your file on their
Web page, it is incorrect, but the link will take you to the correct
file dated July 2001 on the USR FTP site. Good luck.

I did download and install the updated .INF file. Realistically, all
they are is a bunch of strings to recognize responses.
I did get a response back from USR:
Thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics.
One of the new features incorporated into v.92 is the v.PCM Upstream
protocol. With v.90, the maximum download speed available is 53k and the
maximum upload is 33.6k. v.PCM Upstream allows the modem to have a higher
upstream rate (up to 48k) by lowering the maximum download speed. For
more information about v.PCM Upstream, please check http://www.v92.com/v92
_faq.htm
You may enable, disable, and modify the v.PCM Upstream settings through
USR''s Control Center software. Please note that if you specify a higher
upload rate than 33.6k, your connection speed (which is based on the
maximum download speed) may be decreased slightly.
Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse the update. You can however,
disable the V.92 features.
+PIG = 1 <- Disables V.PCM Upstream
+PMH=1 <- Disables Modem on Hold
+PQC=3 <- Disables Quick Connect
Add this to your init string: "AT+PIG=1 +PMH=1 +PQC=3" or run it from a
terminal program such as Hyper Terminal. Include the spaces and make sure
that you are using Caps. This can not be saved in the NVRAM settings of
the modem so it will have to initialize everytime the modem is reset. If
it is included in the modem properties (connections/advanced/extra
settings...) it should work just fine (uses the settings every time the
modem is used).
I'll have to do some experimenting to see if I can get it back to what I
had in some form or another.
Yes, that's true, but the new one has the V.92 responses and also
some of the new modem commands and responses. That information is
written into the system's Registry so that when DUN initializes the
modem, or encounters one of the new responses, it knows what to do
or report. Try the commands as USR suggested and see if that helps.
Good luck.
Well, it looks like I may end buying a new modem. Disabling v.92 does
nothing. Since my dialup has no v.92 support, I doubted it would make a
difference. I used the little terminal program that is part of the Control
Center. I tried dialing several times. What is weird is that each time I
dial, I get a 41K connection, then 37K, then 41K, then 37K, etc.. Very
weird. I tried 'reseting' to no effect.
Before this upgrade, I got consistent 45333 connections 99% of the time.
This is at both my current location and previous (same phone number and
phone system central office.)
I'll try a few other things, just in case (disconnecting phones,
bypassing surge supressor), but I doubt if there will be any change.
Hopefully I can find an 'old' Sportster v.90, otherwise I guess I'll have
to try another brand of external modem (I've never had good luck with
internals.)
Before you give up, go to the USR site, download the latest controlcenter,
comepletely remove your modem and all things connected with it from your OS.
Also dissconnect the modem.
If you know about registry editing programs remove all references to USR and
3com.
Be sure to turn your computer off and wait a 30 seconds after you uninstall
everything.
Denote this is after you have rebooted and windows has updated it's self to
no modem.
Then install controlcenter, reboot and then shut down comepletely and
connect the
modem to serial port 1. Boot your computer and let windows do it's stuff, if
you have the option
while it is installing the modem use the USR ini file, otherwise replace it
from the my computer
properties update drivers.
After all that be sure to do a boot, not a reboot !
Then start controlcenter and update your modem, if it says no update
available, I'd reupdate
with the file you downloaded to update with last.
That's all I can think of, my USR 5686D was a pain, but worth the effort to
get it working right.
After a boot, you should have a 49333 connection at least, if your lines are
good. I live out in
the middle of nowhere, and I get 49333 or better. Really you have to drive a
125 miles to get
to nowhere from here. )
