I have recently obtained a U1496E ZyXEL with 6.01 Roms to upgrade from
a Supra 2400, to connect to my AMIGA A500.
The Supra proved to be bulletproof for incoming Usenet feed and BBS
connects using NComm 2.
The ZyXEL problem is that when connecting to my Waffle feed via uucico, the
modems handshake but when the login prompt is sent the RXD light on the
modem panel flashes but the data is not passed to uucico and the connection
goes Timeout and disconnects.
A similar thing happens if I dial the feed site via NComm, the modems connect
but the login prompt is received (RXD flashes) but it is not echoed on the
screen. I have found if I press <esc> followed by <cr> the prompt appears
on the screen.
Reconnect the Supra and all connects work perfectly.
Set up: Amiga A500 Rev6 1Meg Chip 2.04 Rom WB2.1
GVP Series I Impact 40Meg Quantum HD 3.? Rom 4Meg Ram
Dillon 1.16 with all updates via a.s.a.u.patches
With the ZyXEL, once a BBS connection is made, XPR ZModem downloads work
error free and fast, especially if there is another ZyXEL on the other end!
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Russell

Sounds like you have not disabled software flow control on the modem.
I have used a ZyXEL U-1496E (with older ROMs) with Waffle uucico and did
not encounter any such problem.

This isn't a problem with the "ZyXEL" this is a problem with the fact that the
other end likely doesn't support any kind of error correction and such. The
"banner" got eaten by the ZyXEL trying to find out what kind of modem the other
end was.
Myself, when I "upgraded" to a USR Dual, I simply put a few "slap returns" in my
send-expect strings in the uulib:l.sys file. These same "slap returns" worked
fine when i upgraded again, and went to my ZyXEL U-1496+
Basically, all you need is an entry such as this.
atronx non SER: 57600 230-2282 "" \n ogin: uujammys ord: ----
Notice the "" \n right after the phone number? Well, as soon as UUCICO has
acknowledged the connection, it will go through these "send" "expect" sequences
and say "hey, I don't expect anything here, so send the next section", which
happens to be a return character. This return will make the other end re-send
its banner, which will have the "ogin:" section wanted :-)
