I don't know if they block it or not, but I set my Apache to port 8080
and was able to access after turning port forwarding on for http 8080.

I tried 80 with no luck - either it's blocked or the admin server is
trapping it.

can see it if i put
http://MY-IP and it works fine, but someone else would get a "page not

Not sure what you mean. I used the router admin screen to turn port
forwarding on for 8080 and then I went to my website and logged in using SSH
and used lynx to retrieve the page from my Apache server running on
my first local machine (after I turned off some remote access restrictions
I had turned on). I used the router IP address (on the WAN side)
and port 8080 (because I had trouble using 80 - possibly a conflict
with admin page on router ?? ).

Why would someone else get a different response ? Unless you're using the
local LAN IP address instead of the WB side.

Adelphia does have a strict "no servers of any kind, ever" policy. Watch
out that the TSR you asked may have passed on your account details to the
abuse department - if they find, when they investigate the report, that you
are in fact running a server: they will cut off access from your modem
without notice, and wait for you to call in to figure out the trouble. At
that point, if you can demonstrate that you have killed the server, they
have the option of charging you a $25 reconnect fee, or simply terminating
your account. Usually, they don't permanently terminate.

As far as the port blocking: Adelphia does not have a national policy to
block any perticular ports. They are, however, made up of a collection of
smaller systems acquired over the years. Some of those regional/local
systems do in fact block certain ports - most commonly 80 and 25. National
tech support at 1-888-Adelnet does not know about the local port blocking,
and local customer service offices are not always informed well enough to
even understand the concept - their job is TV, not Powerlink. Getting an
answer over the phone is NOT reliable. The ONLY way to tell if a given port
is blocked _for_you_ is to try to connect to it from outside Adelphia
(assuming something's listening on your machine).

Code Red took down a lot of servers, including Microsoft's patch
update site, even though the patch to fix the knon buffer overflow
had been available for several weeks:

Code Red plague on the rampage
By James Middleton [20-07-2001]

"...Earlier this morning [Friday], windowsupdate.microsoft.com was
defaced with the worm's characteristic statement: "Hello! Welcome
to http://www.worm.com! Hacked by Chinese!"

Microsoft has since fixed the hack, but suffered the embarrassment of
revealing that it did not update its own servers with the latest
security patches.

The Code Red worm exploits a known buffer overflow vulnerability in
the ISAPI extension in the Index Server of Windows 2000 and XP beta,
for which Microsoft released a patch in June..."

The recent Slammer SQL worm also took down Microsoft servers, even though
a patch was available:

Adelphia probably doesn't want to be responsible for being the source of
future infections, for fear of being sued. They may also sell web hosting
services and don't want to compete with their residential customers.

Web hosting sites are available for as little as $ 3.00 - $ 10.00 per month,
which seems like a small price to pay for a 24 by 7 operation that relieves
the customer of worrying about the script kiddies.

Wouldn't "Thank you for _trying_ to use Power Link" be more accurate?
