I have just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and would like
to download, install and run a free-for-home-use Pick(-like) system.
Any advice?

I've got OpenQM running on Vista Business edition. I found that you
needed UAC turned on for this to install properly.

Note the personal edition of OpenQM restricts file sizes to around half
a megabyte. That means you'll run out of workability fairly quickly.

Other options for OpenQM are to spring for a commercial licence (which
is pretty cheap, and doesn't require an annual licence fee), or to load
linux into a Virtual Machine and load the GPL version. (See installation
notes at www.rushflat.co.nz). In fact, this is probably the best option
for a "free" pick-like system - all the other "free" options will
restrict user counts, functionality, or the activation period.

I know there is a personal version of UniVerse, but can't comment on
whether it runs on Vista. Likewise, I've seen references here that you
can run an unlicensed version of D3 as a single user system indefinitely.

HTH.

I've got UniData's free version on WinXP Pro, so
can't speak to Vista compatibility, but it supports
four users (thought it was three, but just tested
it and have four users logged in right now.

No limits on functionality, AFAICT, and I've never
had the activation expire, IIRC.

I've been working on my latest demo application using OpenInsight
8.0.6 running under Vista Home Premium SP1. It's not yet 'officially
supported' by Revelation under Vista and it is not free, but the
Personal Edition (about $100.00 and no annuals) might be worth a look
if you only need it for personal use at home. I also know of a few
other Revelation users running on Vista, but I'm not sure which
version - probably business. I'd be happy to show you (or anyone) OI
running under Vista Home using WebEx. Just let me know.

A propos of this, do all of the Picky systems that run under Vista work with
Home Premium or do they require the Business edition?

I am running Revelation's OpenInsight 8.0.6 under 32-bit Vista Home
Premium. However, we will have to wait and see which version, or
versions, are ultimately 'officially' supported following official
testing of OpenInsight under Vista which will no doubt happen
following wider adoption of Vista in the market place.

That may depend on the nature of your system:

If you only want a single user system, then I think that any version
of Windows will do.

If you want to run a multi-user system, then you will need to test this.

Mike,

Raining Data offers an eval. copy of D3 at no cost. I don't know if
it's certified
for Vista or not.

IBM offers the 2-User Personal Edition of UniVerse at no cost and it
is certified on
Vista Ultimate, Business and Enterprise. It is not certified on any
Vista Home
editions, but it may work.

Ofcourse, like most evaluation products, the P.E. version of UniVerse
is not
supported by IBM.

Please let me know if we can assist you in getting an eval. copy of D3
or UniVerse.

D3 isn't certified with Vista - best bet with ANY vista system would
be to run using Virtual PC under XP or even Linux
