ORACLE'S HIDDEN WEAKNESSES: WHY THE WORLD'S
NO. 1 DATABASE COMPANY MAY BE IN FOR A FALL

http://www.anchordesk.com/a/adt0812ba/2419

An imposing structure may harbor deadly dry rot in
a home's foundation. An impressive company may conceal
destructive flaws as well. Oracle has five dangerous
weaknesses. Unless they are corrected, this giant
corporation may crumble from the bottom.

Yep, I read the 'Berst Alerts' each day (on the email list). They are always
good for a laugh, but seldom give a considered, level-headed opinion. Still,
that's the idea of the column - to be provocative.

Well, this article is flawed from the beginning. Dry rot is a fungus that
grows on wood, and very few homes have a wood foundation. Or if they do,
they deserve to crumble. Simile applies more to MS than Oracle - if the
OS crumbles, any application isn't going to run well.

1. Oracle (and the world in general, including me on usenet) has long
recognized that more is to earned from apps and service contracts than OS's.
Bill Gates also recognizes the fact they've been able to make so much money
from OS is an aberration - that's why they had such nasty contracts and
are now buying/building up content and distribution providers.

2. Linux/Oracle announcement.

3. Correct, the arrogance is inexcusable. (Wasn't that the quote/caption of
Larry on the cover of Forbes when they got caught posting orders illegally?)

4. I can't say I wouldn't want to be in Scott McNealy's shoes. It is a
valid criticism if true - but I think all the people mentioned are really so
arrogant their real problem is their arrogance, not specifically trying to
denigrate Bill (with the possible exception of McNealy - but he sure is a
crackup to listen to about it!) But how many CEO's are going to be
shrinking violet wallflowers, anyways?

5. First he says Oracle is to narrow focused, now too broad. It is valid
to note that many companies have screwed up when moving beyond their core
competencies, especially now that the conglomeration excesses of the '80s
are now devolving, but the examples cited really show that Larry is willing to
look ahead and try new things. If he doesn't hit a homer every time, no
big deal, it's better than being stuck in a rut. It's not like he's betting
the whole income stream on them. Unlike, say, DEC or Apple. Nobody really
knows what paradigm comes next in this series: Mainframe, minicomputer,
microcomputer, network... It is a good thing to keep several bases covered
in such a case.

6. What a fricken' PITA of a website. Jeez. Stay on one page until I want
to leave, eh?

Thanks for the post though, Joe.
